The Urban League Presents
"Voices Of Our People"
C d K X W m Y T w A t’

Recent budget constraints have forced the Urban League o f Portland to
eliminate two programs—the occupational awareness program and the la
bor education advancement program. Governmental budget cuts and in
creased demands on tra d itio n a l sources o f private funds could have a
further impact on the League’ s programs. In light o f these circumstances,
the League had undertaker an evaluation o f how it can continue to provide
needed services to minority and low-income residents o f Portland.
In an effort to secure financing to continue the League’ s programs, we
are today announcing the first o f what we hope to be a series o f fund-raising
programs this year.
On February 27, the League w ill present “ Voices O f Our People,’ ’ a
readers theater performance by the Media Forum Players o f Hollywood,
California. The performers include six nationally known Black actors, in
cluding Robert Hooks, the actor who appeared in the television series
“ NYPD” and most recently in the NBC mini-series “ Sophisticated G$nt>.”
Joining Mr. Hooks w ill be actors Denise Nicholas, who also appeared in
“ Sophisticated Gents” and the series “ Room 222,“ Brock Peters, ac
claimed film and stage actor, Janet MacLachlan, Tracee Lyles and Charles
Floyd Johnson, producer, co-star o f the New Maverick Show.

"Slow Dance On The Killing Ground"
The multi-award winning play, Slow Dance on the K illing Ground by
William Hanley will open February 12th and run through March 20th at the
Wilson Center for the Performing Arts. The production is being directed by
Robert Markley, an 11-year veteran o f Portland theatre. Markley served as
lighting designer in an award winning presentation o f “ Slow Dance” at Mt.
Hood Community College in 1971.
This contemporary American drama stars Steven Clark Pachosa. Nancy
Benner and Rick Jones. Pachosa, winner o f the 1980 Willamette Week Best
Actor Award for his portrayal o f Dylan Thomas, brings 15 years o f theatri
cal experience to his role o f Mr. Gias. Nancy Benner reprises her role o f
Rosie which she performed in the Mt. Hood Community College presenta
tion, thus bringing an 11-year perspective and involvement to the current
production. The part o f Randall w ill be portrayed by theatre veteran, Rick
Jones, recently applauded for his compelling performance in Storefront
Theatre’ s Short Eyes. The role o f Randall is acclaimed as the “ modern.
Black Hamlet” and is a rare and solid vehicle for a Black actor to perform
subtle and powerful work in an extensive role.
The play and its author are the winners o f three Broadway awards during
the years 1963-1965. The production o f Slow Dance in the YW CA’s Wilson
Center mark« a re-opening o f that space for community access to individual
performers. The show also speaks directly to the YW CA’ s One Imperative:
to eliminate racism.
Performances are scheduled for Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings
at 8 pm at the Wilson Center, 1111 SW 10th in the Downtown YW CA.
Tickets for opening are $5.50, reception to follow the performance, and
general admission for all performances is $4.50 on Friday and Saturdays
and $3.50 Thursdays. Students and Seniors receive a $1 discount. For fur
ther information or reservations, please call the Wilson Center office at 223-
6281, ex. 217.

images in the communications industry. The Media Forum Players is a pro
fessionally produced community outreach and fund-raising component o f
the organization.
The performance will be at 7 pm in the Jefferson High School performing
arts center. There will also be performances o f drama, dance and music by
local artists. The performance will include a commemoration o f the life o f
Dr. M artin Luther King. For ticket inform ation, call the Urban League
Main Office, 224-0151 weekdays.
Also, from 2-4 pm, on Saturday, the actors w ill conduct a community
