A fte r tw o years o f planning, this co m m un ity received a federal grant in N o v e m b e r, 19 8 0 , to d e v e lo p a com prehensive c o m m u n ity m e n ta l health center— the N o rth /N o rth e a s t C o m m u n ity M e n ta l H ealth C enter, In c ., as the m ain agency fo r m ental health services fo r this section o f the c o u n ty . T h e C e n te r p ro vid e s p re ventive m aintenance and re h a b ilita tive mental health care to the diverse c u ltu ra l groups o f this c o m m u n ity regardless o f their ab ility to pay. “ W e w ant people to re a lize just w h a t services are a v a ila b le fo r th e m ,” says B a rb ara G ain e s, p ro g ra m d e v e lo p e r fo r th e C e n te r. "F e e s are based on a slidin g scale determ ined by gross fa m ily incom e and n u m b e r o f d e p e n d e n ts .
