Griffin receives Peyton Award

Relations award w ill be presented to
Father Bert O r iffin o f St. A ndrew s
Church. The award is given annual­
ly by the C ity o f P o rtla n d /M u ltn o -
m ah C o u n ty fo r c o n trib u tio n s to
human relations.
D r. A rth u r F le m m in g , o utgoing
ch airp erso n o f the U .S . C o m m is ­
sion on C iv il R ights, w ill speak at
the Awards Banquet M onday.
D r . F le m m in g , a fo rm e r P re s i­
dent o f the U n iv e rs ity o f O re g o n ,
was named to the C ivil Rights C o m ­
mission in 1974 by President Nixon.
This December he was removed by
President Reagan following his criti­
cism o f the negative impact o f Rea­
gan's proposed eco no m ic policies
on m in o ritie s and on eq ual rights
and civil rights enforcement.
T he banquet w ill be held at noon
at St. Andrews Church. For reserva­

crease in racial and religious harass­
ment in the state o f Oregon.
R ev. G r if f in , 4 9 , was b o rn in
L A and raised in P o rtlan d , where
he has been at St. A ndrew s fo r 11
years. A t a tim e when parish m em ­
bership was dwindling. Rev. G riffin
initialed and built up such programs
as a legal clinic and an emergency
food and clothing project. H e also
was an o rig in al sponsor o f Oregon
Fair Share and is currently president
o f A lb in a F a ir Share, a mem ber o f
the A lb in a M inisterial A llian ce, Ec­
umenical Ministerics o f Oregon and
the P ortland O p p o rtu n ity In d u stri­
alization Center.
He is being cited for "outstanding
w ork in p ro m o tin g in te rra c ia l and

cial groups that make up and enrich
our society.
