W e ’ ve had Superm an 1, I I and last Saturday Kellen W inslow , the super fine tight end o f the San Diego Chargers, showed us a sneak pre view o f Superman I I I . Before a full house in M ia m i’ s O range Bowl W inslow was sim ply awesome in helping the C hargers to a 41-38 playoff victory. D row ned in sweat, his jersey looking more like a doorm at than anything else, his face showing the agony o f the war he was certainly in, K ellen b attled , and b attled , and finally won. On the day he had 13 catches (a p layo ff record that was previously held by P ittsb u rg h 's John S tall- w o rth ), he blocked top punts and scored 2 TDs. This was a game full o f N F L highlights. In fact we will venture to say it was the a ll-tim e great game in N F L history. It was beautiful to watch, a thrill a minute by both teams. Morgan: Is he the best? by Ron Sykes As the old saying goes, "Y o u can call him ’ E .C .,’ or you can call him *C ,’ or you can call him M o rg a n .” Some call E .C . M organ, 6-8 center from Jesuit High School the best big man in the state. “ E .C ,” says coach Jim R olph, “ plays well inside, he’s practically unstoppable when he gets the ball down deep. H e ’s probably the best position player in the state." E .C ., as he is called in the Jesuit community, has been a varsity play er for the past three years. As a 6-3 freshman he played J .V . and was the team’s leading rebounder (6.3) and second in scoring ( 11.7). D uring his sophomore year, his first on the Varsity, E .C . was doing quite well until tragedy struck. One night w hile d rivin g home during the Christm as break, E .C . suddenly lost control o f his sports car, left the road and turned com pletely over. "T h is was really the first adver sity that I had to overcome, and It really changed my outlook on life ," says M organ. “ I realized that it all could have ended so suddenly that cold, wintry night." E .C . recovered from his serious leg injury but his basketball season was over early. Lu ckily for M organ the basket ball court was not the only court he excelled on. As a 6-5, 18-year-old freshman he was one o f the best ten nis players in the state. And as a 15- ycar-old he was ranked nationally in his age group. E .C . has played No. 1 on the Cru sader tennis team for three straight years. While his leg injury kept him out o f action on the basketball court, he recovered sufficiently to lead Jesuit to th e ir th ird straight state tennis championship. Morgan helped the Crusaders by capturing two seconds and a third in single. Quite an accomplishment for a kid who by his ju n io r year had shot up to 6-8. E C. M O R G A N “ I love te n n is ,” beamed E .C ., “ but really there aren ’ t many 6-8 tennis players around." E.C . would like to play m ajor college ball, but thinks a smaller school is more real istic. “ E .C . controls what we’ re going to d o ,” says Crusader Coach Jim Rolph. " H o w E .C . goes is how we go. The games that he doesn’t per form well in arc the ones we struggle in ." Jesuit stands 5-2 on the seasons* and each win E .C . has scored over 20 points. California holds a 40-31 edge over O S U in the 7 |-g a m e series. H o w ever, O S U has won the last eight games played. The last time (he Beavers lost to Cal was 84-83 in Berkeley in 1977. O S U holds a 44-26 lead over S ta n fo rd , including a current w inning streak o f fo u r straight games. Times have been tough in Palo A lto however; O S U had to struggle to win 62-57 last year and won 18-16 in 1980. At C orvallis it has been a different story as OSU defeated Stanford 85-67 and 76-62 in Gill Coliseum. Ralph M ille r commented on the trip to C al and S ta n fo rd : " I t is obvious after the first week o f the conference season that there is no clear cut favorite. It is mandatory if Special Interview next week with Julius "the Doctor" Erving I you are going to be in the race at all that you have to win at home. So far this season we have been a good example o f Jekyll and Hyde. I f we play as well and hard as we did against Arizona State we certainly will have a chance o f coming back with two victories. However, if we play like we did agaisnt Arizona, or Id ah o , or P ortland the first tim e, then we could very easily come home with two defeats. It will take excellent effo rt by us against both teams in the Bay Area for us to have a chance at winning." Oregon State enters Saturday’ s C al game w ith a 9-gam e road winning streak in P acific-10 play. OSU won all nine conference road games last year en route to a 17 I P acific-10 record. O S U is ranked 17th by A P and 19th by U P I this week a fter being ranked 15th and 12th last week. Lester C onner is leading the Beavers with a 14.9 scoring average. He leads in assists w ith 56 (5.1 average), in steals w ith 34 (3.1 average) and is second in rebounding with 53 (4.8 average). As a team OSU is averaging 17.8 assists per game, an assist ratio o f .656 per game based on 196 assists for 299 field goals. The Reavers nearly set a Gill Coliseum record in downing Arizona 68-55. OSU shot .909 (2 0 -2 2 ) from the free throw line. Yale holds the reoerd at .912 (31-34) in 1957 The Beavers hit 14 straight before Lester Conners missed the front half o f a two-shot foul against Arizona. C al senior center M ark M cN am ara is currently leading the P a cific-10 in scoring and rebounding and the last player to finish the season leading both departm ents was U C L A ’ s Bill W a lto n . W oodside at 6 -1 0 can dominate most, but against E .C . it is always tough. “ I enjoy our m a tc h -u p ,” says Morgan. “ Steve is really tough and when we bang heads i t ’ s always a good show." M organ refused to let a little ad versity get in his way. His determin ation proved to be stronger than most, and with his skills and strong e ffo rts the Jesuit Crusaders w ill p robably show in M arch at the O S A A ’s annual prep show. H ard work w ill get you some w h e re.” he says. " A n d the State Tournament is where I want to be in M a rc h .” Right now Jesuit is con sidered as only an outside chance o f beating Parkrose, but it would be wise not to count E.C . Morgan out.
