Portland Observer, December 31,1961 Page 9 Increase driving precautions value (Continued fro m pane 8 column J) CAN YOU STOP IN TIME? Studded snow tires on the rear wheels (where their use is perm itted) reduce stop ping distances on ice by about 19 per cent. The old-standby— reinforced tire chains— is still best. They reduce braking distances on ice by 50 per cent. They produce from four to seven times the pulling ability o f conven tional tires on snow and ice. Some new models— down-sized find front wheel d riv e — require lim ited clearance chains (typ e P L chains). Your dealer or mechanic can recommend the proper type. Another <,aution Easton emphasized is the fact (hat snow tires must be radials if the other tires on the non-drive wheels are ra dials. Otherwise a dangerous "fish-tailing" or other instab ility can result causing (he driver to lose control o f the vehicle. "Regardless o f the type o f traction aid used,” Easton warned, "at no time on snow or ice will the resulting traction be near (hat o f conventional tires on dry pavement." As an example o f (he differences, Easton commented that 20 mph on an icy stretch may produce a stopping distance equal to that resulting from a speed o f 60 mph under normal dry pavement conditions. Getting the " fe e l" o f the road is recom mended— gently trying the brakes or using short bursts o f acceleration to find out if and when the tires slip or spin. When they do, the driver must slow down and do all maneuver ing with a delicate touch— on the steering wheel, on the accelerator, and on the brake pedal. Easton concluded: " T h e driver who un derstands how to improve traction and re duce risks stands the best chance o f avoiding skid accidents on w inter slick road sur faces."
