Osborne Jr. has accepted the invitation to be the new minister o f the congregation o f St. Andrews Com m unity Church. The bonding o f minister and con gregation came on December 6, the second Sunday in Advent on the Christian Calendar, the announce ment being made by James Crolley, president o f the congregation. The Rev. Osborne was greeted warmly after the formalities by his parish ioners whom he has served as tem porary pastor. Installation ceremonies for the new minister w ill take place some time in January. The church is lo cated at Ainsworth Ave. and 30,h Street. • A pre-holiday party for members and friends o f the Semper Fidelis club was an event last week. The home o f Mr. and Mrs. Archie Bon ner was adorned with all the color ful promises o f Christmas—bells and tinsel and lighted tree—to wel come a houseful o f guests. Irrestible foods from a festive table, bridge in half o f the party rooms and billiards in the other half kept everybody cir culating to enjoy it all. Members o f Semper Fidelis in clude: Frances Johns, Juanita Rob inson. Dorothy M cDowell, Celes- . tine Austin, Minnie Belle Johnson, Viola Bonner, Quindella Cage, Gus- tavia Bonner, Amelia Lanier, Ruby Waldon and Ernestine Wiseman, president. • W ith snow and ice in New York City where Carol Morrison lives and sunshine and balmy weather in Los •* lie .1_ — with trefe U S 1 1 Electric -r__a Trucking «yetem - 2 reeketic truck» or Tvco Racing Dirt M e w ith 14 ' of racing •ction for •» the tfwiS» of motorcycle racing Reg 39.99 ea ELECTRIC BLANKETS Reg T w *’ S * « - 2 CAROL MORRISON Angeles at the other end o f her TW A airlines run, this Portland- born young woman is accustomed to variations in the weather. Poverty, hunger, social starva tion, political exclusion are the in gredients o f "w h a t’ s le ft" for countless Americans. It’ s all a mat ter o f whether you wan, to expect the leftovers and whether you can survive on them. The people who for some reason decide that they want more than what's available but lack the means to obtain it and get caught become prisoners or " o u t siders," not by choice bu, by condi tion. Your condition will dictate the options or alternatives to you at a given moment. It is therefore rea sonable to say that criminals arc the products o f a society that hasn’ t made enough available for every body. As we proceed in our viewing o f the prisoner the question o f race be comes increasingly im portant. Blacks are confined at a rate eight and one half times as great as white. There are 350,000 prisoners in penal institutions across the country and a great number o f them arc Black. The question o f slavery or neo-slav ery is greatly enhanced when we consider the fact that prison has tra ditionally been used as a controlling device against people o f color. I don't think that anyone would seri ously argue the fact that there exist two brands o f justice in A m e ric a - one Black, the other White. When a system o f discriminatory justice ex ists so as to systematically exclude and deprive whole groups o f people o f their constitutional and human rights, as exist in the American The Rev. Leonard Jessie started the program in September to aid those on fixed incomes by providing food and clothing. " I t ’ s not a han d ou t," Jessie ex plained. " I t 's an ongoing supple ment for seniors only." Sooner or later the people (Black people) who are most affected by ra cist crim inal and civil justice w ill have to mount a movement. Our survival may depend on our ability to counteract white racism in the criminal justice system. Wc can’ t af ford the luxury o f saying the prob lem doesn't affect me— I ’ m not a crim inal. Socially, politically, and economically there isn’ t a free Blackman in the country. We are all bound to one another whether wc like it or not. It’ s important that we understand that justice administered according to white norms and values isn’ t justice, it’s racism!!! We must make white America realize that we w ill no longer tolerate its p rofiting o ff our social and economic suffering. We w ill iot sit back and watch our children starve and become Junky Frankcnsteins and pay for the privi lege. Hungry people find no crime in satisfying their hunger. The crime is in the greed o f the few who de prive the many o f sustenance. The dispensation o f wealth with a fair and just system o f justice must become a priority for this countrv. The worth o f a people is found in their ability to actuate their aspira tions within a system o f govern ment. Il is therefore vital for the Black community to become c rit ically involved in the criminal justice system and its administration. We take for granted our securities, thinking that nothing will interrupt our play. We feel safe knowing that someone else is administering jus tice, not caring for a moment whether that justice is ju st—only caring that someone else is taking care o f it. We are told that the only safe way to protect society is to lock up the criminals. We never stop to think about what constitutes crim inal. In Nazi Germany it was crimin al to be a Jew and in many ways America has made the aspirations of the oppressed crim inal.
