Bu, now, if you can believe it, it’s about to happen again. Six Cuban and six Americans won gold medals at the World Cup elim ination round held in Shreveport, La., clinching their participation in the big event as members o f the North and Central American zone’s team. The World Cup tourney will be held in Montreal, Canada. The roster for the W orld cup reads as follows: Europe, two trams; Asia, two teams; Africa, two teams; and South America, Ocean ia, North and Central America and Canada one team each. Since Puerto Rico and the D o minican Republic drew a blank in Shreveport the North and Central America Team will be comprised solely from the U.S. and Cuba. This team should be very strong since both countries are super-strong in International boxing. The elim ination round was a rough test, simply because o f the U .S. strength in the lower weight classes. Cuba was expected to dominate and experts picked the Castroites to win 8 o f the 12 gold medals offered. The U.S. will be represented by: Richard Savage (106 lbs.), James Mitchel (112 lbs.), Louis Howard (125 lbs.) Johnny W illiam s (135 lbs.), Carl Williams (H vyw t.) and Johnny Keys(Superheavy). The Cubans will send their usual group of seasoned veterans: Hipo- lito Ramos (Flyw eight), Olympic runner-up; Omar Santiesteban (112 lbs.); Adolfo Horta (Lightweight), Olympic runner-up and W orld champion in the 125 lb. class; Angel Herrera (W elterweight), two-time Olympic champion; and Jose Gom ez (M iddlew eight), Olympic gold medal winner. W ith all these ex-champions on the Cuban squad the U.S. boxers were superior to the Cubans. The U .S. continues to build a young team while the Cubans are content to rely on their older fighters. Word has it that T eo filio Stephenson, Cuba’s threc-timc Olympic champ, is ready to defend his title in Los Angeles. When will T e o filio stop beating up on the youngsters of the world? Also, he was one of 6 selected from a pre- ■ dominantly Black institution. The < others are Anthony Reed and DeWaync Jackson of South Carolina / State, M ike Jones and Malcolm ■ Taylor of Tennessee State and Mike West of North Carolina A&T. Robinson, a graduate of Parker .* High, was really elated about mak- I ing the All-Am erican team: “ I t ’ s ; really a thrill. 1 really wasn’t expcct- 1 ing to make it. It means (hat I ’m the •’ best linebacker in Division l-A A . ■ To think about it just makes me feel : great.” Robinson also wasn’t expecting to ’ be named as the SW AC Defensive- Playcr-of-thc-Year: “ To be named as the best in the SW A C is a great feeling. When you’re voted as the best in the SW AC that means that you can compete with anybody any where. Some great defensive players have graduated from the S W A C . and I ’m glad to be among that num ber.” Robinson credits the play o f the ‘Trees of Terror’ for his success, the GSU front four: "O u r defense was designed for me, or the middleline backer, to make most of the tackles. I was just fortunate to do my jo b .” He has 128 total tackles in eight and one-half games before an ankle in jury kept him ou, o f the Tiger last two games, causing them to lose both and not make the playoffs. Andre, the son o f Mrs. Evelyn Bezille, is hoping that the recogni tion that comes with being an All- American helps him land a post-sea- son berth in a play-off game and to also gc, drafted: " I ’m hoping to get a chance to play in some post-season senior All Star game to upgrade my credentials among the pro scouts. All I need is a chance.” WE'RE HERETO HELP YOU! Head coach Eddie Robinson states this about Robinson: “ 1 ex pected him to make the team. He’s a good athlete and is very deserving of the award. I hope he gets a chance to play in some bowl game. He de serves it.” Canada first! A Black quarterback has never started in the Super Bowl, but two Black quarterbacks were the heroes in Canada’s Super Bowl— the Grey Cup classic. Former University of Washington great Warren Moon led the Edmon ton Eskimos to their fourth straight Grey Cup title by edging the Ottawa Roughriders, 26-23. Ottawa’s quar terback was J.C. Watts of Oklaho ma fame. Moon was named M V P in the 1980 classic, but this time the honor went to Watts. Davis honored G ram bling’s president. Dr. Jo seph B. Johnson, presented Gramb ling’s M an o f the Year award to W illie Davis, the former Tiger All- American, Green Bay Packers all- pro and recent N F L Hall of Fame inductee, in half-time ceremonies at the Bayou classic.
