When Cam eron (the voice behind such hit songs as “ Manic O f Y ou ” and "Funkdown” ) was putting together his new album, he and his collaborator- producer Randy Muller (leader and producer o f million selling Brass Con struction and producer o f the hit act Skyy) realized that the songs formed a theme that explored “ the different phases o f love relationships.” Hence the title, Cameron‘s In Love. But growing up in Guyana, South America, Cameron learned about love through experiences which were vastly different from the average American style o f dating and couting. “ 1 wasn’ t a lady-killer, basically,** confesses the attractive recording star. “ I was pretty shy in school, mainly into books and studying until I got to high school." When Cameron did meet his “ first love” at the rehearsal o f a friend’ s band, he didn’ t ask her out to a dance, a movie, or for a night on the tpwn. Dating in Guyana is governed by a completely different set o f rules. " In Guyana, back then you didn’t jus, take girls ou, on dates like that,” explains Cameron. “ First o f all. you have to have the parents’ consent. And o f course, they may not approve o f you, or they might think that the girl is too young.” M ol B row n dem onstrates technique to children of the Children's C lu b . PRODUCTIONS’ Even if the parents do approve o f the relationship, that doesn’ t mean that they don’t keep a watchful eye on the courting lovers. “ Seeing girls is more or less confined to her house under the supervision o f the parents. They are always there, so there’s no room for hanky-panky.” ( onsequently, the suitor spends as much lime and effort courting the par ents as he does the girl. "In fact, you really don't go to see the g irl—you go to see the parents under the pretext o f seeing the girl, or vice-versa." The parents of Cameron s first girlfriend obviously must have approved of him. The couple stayed together for seven years, building a solid bond of love that continued even after Cameron moved to the United States, leav ing his love behind, but carrying on the relationship for a while with letters and phone calls. Listeners to Cameron s In Love will note that Cameron has an almost universal understanding o f love relationships that is human, sensitive, and down-to-earth, and se, in a wide variety o f musical styles that are danceable and appealing. Cameron has learned a Io, about romance since his very firs, love. If that same g irl’ s parents got a taste o f Cameron’ s captivatingly ro mantic m usic- which took him to the top o f the charts in his native Guyana — no doubt they would still approve. 3 rd A N N U A L Halloween Masquerade Ball M PBOOUCTOB FtATUKS COMEDIANS (JSGAN A ALLEN N A S It» » G » 0 0 W J « FRIOAT ALSO.
