By Ron Sykes Sports Editor WHY SUGAR RAY LEONARD WILL BEAT TOMMY “ HITM AN" HEARNS With James Allen, Portland dock worker, Sam M oore, local bar tender, Dr. Harold Adams, a group o f us took in a replay o f the Leonard-Ayube Kalule fight. Leonard added the WBA Junior Middleweight crown to the WBC Welterweight title he already owns. On the same night, Tommy Hearns scored a third round knock out o f Pablo Baez, a native o f the Dominican Republic, who fights out o f Los Angeles and is the California “ state” champ. Hearns scored an unimpressive knockout over a man whose record now stands at 14-10, hardly im pressive, while Leonard took on a champion in a higher division whose record stood at 36-0. Hearns fought a nobody. Leonard downed a true, tough champion. Kalule, the Ugan dan now living in Denmark, was a strong fighter who could give any one a tough fight. Brad Pye, Jr., my counterpart who writes for the L .A . Sentinel says "Sugar Ray Leonard might as well mail in his retirement papers before he climbs into the ring on September 16th against Tommy Hearns at Ceasars Palace in Las Vegas.” Now, I've long respected this gentleman from LA for his knowledge and expertise in and about the sporting world. And I've tried somewhat to pattern my style from his, but here we part company. Tommy Hearns w ill not defeat Sugar Ray. Hearns is a great fighter, that’ s for sure, but the very things that make him outstanding among welterweights w ill be negated by Leonard. Hearns at 6ft. 1 inch, usually enjoys a tremendous ad vantage over your normal welter weight who usually stands between 5ft, 6 inches to 5ft 8 inches. Sugar Ray is also big for a welter at 5ft 10 inches. Hearns w ill have a height advantage on Leonard, but where it is usually 6 or 7 inches, against Sugar Ray it will be only three. Comparing the opponents o f each fighter, we see the advantage in Leonard’ s favor. Leonard has the experience o f going the 15 round distance and believe you me that means something. Sugar Ray has also been in with the master boxers in a la Wilfred Benitez and Roberto Duran. Hearns hasn’ t fought any one who even comes close to the aforem entioned fighters. "T h e H itm an” was just devastating said Pye. Sure but in fe rio r opposition w ill always make a superior fighter devastating. Leonard is super quick and w ill not be suckered by the Hearns left hook. And that too, will be an advantage for Leonard. Hearns has a tendency to carry his left hand low. Sugar will exploit this weakness immediately. The so called “ hit man" will be hit so many times by Leonard that he w ill be to tally frustrated by the tenth round. 1 see Sugar Ray tantalizing Tommy in the same manner in which he disposed o f Duran. It w ill end sometime after the eleventh round w ith Leonard the winner. Hearns was my choice 8 months ago, but since then, Leonard’ s career has skyrocketed and that’ s because his people chose the tougher opponents, while Hear ns people chose the lesser. Therefore, I w ill not seem to know fo r whom the bell tolls, I know it w ill -toll fo r Tommy Hearns somewhere after round eleven. Muhammad A li was recently hospitalized in Chicago, but he held a press conference last Monday to announce he’s still planning another comeback. Comeback to your wife and children A li, but please not the ring. And the first o f the college preview mags are on the stands. The eastern writers still believe that the only people playing football in the PAC-10 sit under the palm trees and ride to work on crowded freeways. Oregon was picked to finish fourth in the PAC-10 by one magazine and fifth by another. U C LA , USC, and Eliot/Masons plan events The Eilot Neighborhood De velopment Association is spon soring a Pot-luck luncheon on July 14th at the Masonic Temple (P H.) 116 N.E.Russell Street. Thomas Vickers, Program Chairman states that all Senior Citizens who wish to Bring students (Continued from Page 1 Col 6) program should be im m ediately reversed, since that very involve ment has led to low enrollm ent in Northeast high schools and given credence to the imputus for closure. It is like luring a person o ff his front porch w ith a frie n d ly smile and, then, confiscating his property before he can return to the premises. I f Black parents see the double standard and the careless attitude tow ard integration that has been shown by this “ new board” as I think they do, there w ill begin now the process of reversing d ram atically p a rtic ip a tio n in the transfer program bring a dish are welcome to par ticipate. The Senior Citizens o f the Eilot Neighborhood who are unable to bring food are also welcome. M r. Vickers said that C om missioner Charles Jordan and other C ity and C ounty o ffic ia ls , along w ith the Urban League; Masonic; O.E.S. officials will also be invited to participate w ith the luncheon beginning at 12 noon. Well, seeing is believing and coach Rich Brooks w ill just have to make believers o f the non-believers. A more realistic pick should have Oregon finishing either firs t or second in the PAC-10.
