School Board keeps police
(Continued from Page I Col 3)
Steve Buel, who voted against the
suspension, said there is racism in
the police bureau and in the schools
but the School Board is attempting
to deal openly with the problem. “ I
haven't seen one open admission or
open approach to dealing with
racism in the police b u re a u .”
Stating that the actions o f the Board
July 2nd when the newly elected
Board plans to close Adams High
School, w ill be racist and will set
back the Board’s progress in dealing
with racism, he said, ” 1 am em-
barassed to criticize the police when
we're going to do the same thing
next week.”
A summary o f C JO activities
provided to the Board gives the
goals of the program as:
• T o devleop in young people a
positive attitude toward the police.
• To develop in young people an
acceptance o f individual responsi
b ility among the police, students,
faculty and the community.
Since O ctober the CJOs have
served the 44 schools w ith 6th
through 8th graders (except Boise
and Tubman where parents rejected
the program). The 14 officers made
2,630 full-length class presentations
to 6 3 ,123 students. In addition, they
participated in various school ac
tivities, field trips, and were present
in the building and on the grounds.
The school program takes 60 per
cent of their duty time, while 40 per
cent is spent on regular juvenile
duties.
