The name Roy Ayers hit the business when he backed H erbie M a n n . " T h e
th in g th a t in flu e n c e d me m ost at th a t tim e was H e rb ie M a n n 's business
awareness. You know , the business behind the music. I ’ m an artist w ho feels
that you re a lly have to give yo u r all to stay as m u s ic a lly creative. So you
re a lly have to gel in to the business to preserve that w h ich is y o u , because
when you become a recording artist you become a sellable item . I f you d o n ’ t
reap the benefits that are rig h tfu lly due you, th a t’ s it. T im e passes on most
perform ers. A fte r all the brig h t lights and the g litte r is gone, there's n othing
to fa ll back on but a m e m o ry. A n d I th in k th a t e n te rta in e rs o u g h t to be
econom ically compensated fo r their talents.”
From H erbie M ann, Roy to o k the route o f a solo a rtis t. “ I knew when I
left M ann, and form ed my ow n group, that I could always go back and per­
fo rm w ith som ebody elese. But I to o k a shot so that I c o u ld do b etter fo r
m yself and at the same time, incorporate voices in my m u s ic ."
When Roy firs t broke as a soloist his in tro d u c tio n was fused w ith music
that had a social message instilled in it; songs like "R ed, Black a n d Green, "
and ".-1 Tear to a Smite. "G ra s s ro o t News wondered why this message wasn’ t
in his latest works like, “ You Send M e and Fever. " Roy stated: “ I changed
my style and the reasons why are that I ’ m an in d iv id u a l o f m any d iffe re n t
personalities. I feel d iffe re n t things at various times. In a day's tim e, I m ight
feel like m aking love. Then, I may feel like helpig a k id o r solve some o f this
B.S., th a t’ s going on in A tla n ta w ith our Black children. D uring 1973, there
was a great awareness and Red, Black and Green was done fo r that reason.

A m ong the w orks o f Roy A yers, the best one that w ill live forever in the
halls o f good q u a lity music is their remake o f the great Sam C o o k e ’ s “ You
Send Me. ” “ Y o u Send Me was my best selling L P because o f the u nique
vocal arra n g em e n ts o f C a rla V a u g h n , the c o -p ro d u c e r. T h a t p ro d u c tio n
showed us that we have to move into d iffe re n t directions at all times.
The d iffe re n t d ire ctio n s o f a talent lik e Roy A yers are a ll headed in one
d irection. He is paving the road o f c o n tro llin g our own destiny on a highway
where user-fees end up repossessing the vehicle called talent.
The 19 8 1 N a tio n a l “ L o u Rawls Parade o f S tars” telethon to raise funds
fo r the U nited Negro College Fund w ill be aired Sunday, June 14th fo r 8:00
to 12:00 p .m ., on K P T V C hannel 12 and K B O O -F M 90.7.
The n a tio n a l te le th o n g oal is $^ m illio n , w ith $ 6 0 ,0 0 0 expected fro m
Oregon.
G overnor V ic to r A tiy e h is the H o n o ra ry C h a irm a n fo r O regon, w hile Ber­
nard Richardson is Fund Raising C o o rd in a to r.
In a d d itio n to ca lling in d onations d u rin g ths broadcast, local residents w ill
attend “ viewing p a rtie s " to raise donations. Anheuser-Busch is u n d e rw ritin g
the n a tio n a l te le v is io n p ro d u c t io n and lo c a l B ud w eiser d is tr ib u to r s are
assisting w ith the parties.
The telethon is ju st part o f the ongoing fu n d -ra isin g activities coordinated
by U N C F to benefit some 41 private Black in s titu tio n s th ro u g h o u t the U nited
States. Last year in P o rtla n d the program netted over $30,000 in pledges and
cash c o n trib u tio n s.
Studies show that at least 79 percent o f all Blacks w ho have college degrees
are graduates o f one o f the n a tio n 's Black in s titu tio n s . Included in that per­
centage are a b o u t 84 p e rce n t o f A m e ric a ’ s B la ck d o c to rs , 80 percent o f
A m e ric a ’ s B lack ju d g es and 72 percent o f the n a tio n 's B lack m ilita r y o f ­
ficers.
A c c o rd in g to B e rn a rd R ic h a rd s o n , w h o is c o o rd in a tin g the P o rtla n d
broadcast o f the telev ision special, L N CF is a m a jo r source o f fu n d in g fo r
the in stitu tio n s w hich also receive operating revenue fro m federal grants and
p riv a te e n d o w m e n ts . In 1979, U N C F c o n tr ib u te d a p p ro x im a te ly $16.2
m illio n to the schools.
“ Students come fro m all parts o f the c o u n try and they come fro m a wide
range o f econom ic and social b a ckg ro u n d s,” R ichardson said. In a d d itio n ,
he noted that not all students w ho attend Black colleges are Black.
