A systematic, intensive search for the disease in Africa for the past two years and the fact that no new cases had been reported to the World Health Organization led o f ficials to declare that the war is over. Smallpox has been eradicated. No one is sure when the last case o f smallpox oc curred in the United States. National reporting suggests that it was in 1949 during an outbreak o f smallpox in the lower Rio Grande Valley, Texas. A I M a a « laadi a aorm al Ufa Because smallpox took so many lives, it was once con sidered one o f the world's most dreaded diseases. The disease, caused by a virus, often left the survivors with distinct disfiguring scars. Dr. Donald Hopkins, Assistant Director o f Opera tions at the Center for Disease Control, and a leader in the fight against the disease, said that by early in 1980 there w ill be six laboratories in the world that have smallpox viruses. These laboratories, in Atlanta, Moscow, London, Tokyo, Peking, and Johannesburg, have been designated to keep the viruses fo r future research if this becomes necessary. In Atlanta, Georgia, the laboratory, at the National Center for Disease Control, is one o f the last refuges o f the smallpox virus that has spread panic and killed m illions o f people fo r thousands o f years. In drab freezers in the laboratory in Atlanta are more than 300 specimens o f the bizarre and rancorous virus. Stored at temperatures o f 94 degrees below zero are specimens from deadly outbreaks which occurred throughout the world in which almost half o f the patients died. The United States has almost enough vaccine stockpiled to protect 200,000 people. The vaccine is stored at Wyeth Laboratories in Marietta, Pennsylvania. This stockpile will be maintained indefinitely. Some health experts think it likely, though not com pletely proved, that the smallpox virus has been eliminated on earth. This is the first time that a major killer o f mankind has been eliminated—a major achieve ment in medical science. Dr. David J. Sencer, former director o f CDC, said, “ Anyone who has had an opportunity to participate in the smallpox eradication program w ill never forget the th rill o f the achievement o f eradication—to see that peo ple can work together—all colors, all religions, and all political beliefs—to bring about complete destruction o f a disease. It is a very th rill ing thing to have been a part o f this campaign. I don’t think that anyone who has had anything to do with the program w ill ever forget it.” (Prep aratio n o f lh n Me by a grant from a rtn le are thoae o f nevexcantv represent article »as made p o m NSF The view« o f (hit the author and do not those o f NSF ) Pacific N.W.
