Page 12 Portland Observar May 21.1981 Sports Talk By Ron Sykes, Sports E d ito r teams, 59-60 at USF; played point guard on those great Celtic teams through the sixties and was tutored by the legendary Red A u erb ach . O h, yes, KC got his shot at managing, but it was o n ly a token shot much like that o f W ills. W ills became the th ird Black manager in m ajor league history and M ay 6, he became the th ird Black manager to be fired. • More on Maury. The C hicago Cubs. New Y o rk M ets and the Kansas C ity Royals had won less or more than the Seat tle Mariners won under M aury Wills -- yet their skippers are still aboard. How long w ill it take fo r M aury to again appear as a m ajor league manager? W ill you believe never? Hate to keep harping on a subject that has too long been fact, but it ’ s true that Blacks just aren’ t given an equal chance when it comes to being a leader o f a major sports franchise. Just can’ t help rem em bering how sad it was to see Boston C eltic assistant coach K .C . Jones sittin g on the bench alongside head man B ill Fitch. Here’ s a man (KC ) who has a trem endous basketball b a ckg ro un d. He played fo r tw o collegiate national cham pionship Please M uham m ad A li, not again. A li, it is re p o rte d , is m aking trave l plans fo r Nassau in the Bahamas fo r the sad purpose o f boxing the European cham pion in Nassau in August. I t ’ s hoped that some boxing co m m ission somewhere w ill stop this inhumane event. It was o nly L a rry H olm es’ firing. k in d heart th a t kept the ex champion from being seriously hurt in th e ir one-sided bout. L a rry had the great one in big tro u b le m any tim es o n ly to back aw ay. A li has only Holmes mercifulness to thank. T h a t alone kept him fro m being seriously hurt. Let’ s hope the champ w ill dispense w ith th is Nassau foolishness. F o rm e r W BC heavyw eight champion Ken N orton, according to Brad Pye, is the greatest receiver in sports to d a y . Reason: N o rto n received every blow unbeaten Gerry Cooney threw in the 54 seconds he lasted against the N o .l challenger. We a ll have o u r idols and fo r a long time I ’ve admired my L A coun terpart M r. Brad Pye, Sports Editor fo r the L A Sentinel. W ould like to share B ra d ’ s views on the W ills “ T a lk about blues in the news, the so-called m a jo r league p rin t media heaved up 25 qi 30-tOns o f it a fte r M aurey W ills was fire d from his jo b as m anager o f the Seattle Mariners. “ H a rd ly , i f ever b e fo re , has a hired or fired manager been downed in so much negativism. “ R arely i f ever b e fo re has one been subjected to such vicious treat ment. I f that sort o f thing is par o f the course, then 1) it makes me ashamed to be in this p ro fessio n; and 2) it is easy to see why so many people is/and out o f sports, are har sh critics o f the media. “ F rom the tim e M a u ry was a teenager in W ashington, D .C ., he always has been a leader, the cap tain type, the manager type. “ W hen he played w ith the Dodgers he was the team ’ s s h o rt sto p , and the C a p ta in . D u rin g va riou s spring tra in in g seasons in Vero Beach, F lo rid a , it was o fte n said that M a u ry knew the rules o f baseball better than anyone on the Field. When he managed winter ball in M e x ic o , he as praised fo r his ability to teach. “ But, i f M aury’ s obituary writers are to be b elieved, he was to ta lly m iscast as a m anager o f the Mariners. It may be true that he was a failure in the role.” Possibly he was the victim o f bar baric circumstances. In his b rie f com m ents to date, W ills has said he was shocked by the d o lla r surplus. Reagan’ s budget, w hich was passed, produced a deficit. “ M y reaction is that there is no logic in terms o f what we’ re about in th is c o u n try . The C ongressional Black Caucus came up with the best alternative budget. Not only would it have engaged an e q u ita b le d is trib u tio n across the b o a rd , but also would have incurred a certain surplus. Part o f the p ro b le m was th a t it was put fo rth by sixteen Black Congressional members. We were the fir s t to respond to Reagan’ s call for an alternative.” Q. M an y o f the goals th a t you J o u g h t f o r , lik e s u p p o rt f o r day care, jo b training, equal education and adequate housing due to cuts in fu n d in g w ill soon become a memory. What are some o f the tac tics or procedures the Congressional Black Caucus m ight utilize to coun ter-act this reduction in q u a lity o f life? A. What can 18 Black members do in a house o f 435 members? In the past we were able to establish alliances with moderate white mem bers. Now they have disavowed us. There’s nothing to work with. What we’ re going to do is hold the line on those programs that mean so much to the u nd erdo g, m in o ritie s , and the poor o f this country. Q. W h a t's h appening to the d e m o c ra tic process th a t so m any lived and died fo r? A. The democratic process is un dergoing a great many changes. The Democratic Party is in d iffic u lty on a national level. O ur House is over w helm ingly Dem ocratic and we are unable to pass th ing s th a t the D em ocratic Party is suppose to be about, which are in direct conflict or opposite to what Reagan wants. I f Reagan’ s economic package is pass ed, then we’re all in trouble because the House w ill become Republican. I d o n ’ t believe th a t Reagan's policies can succeed in this country. Now because o f racism and the econom ic c o n d itio n those who once had, haven’ t now. We forgot that not one o f us are free. “ We have to somehow reinje ct our vision o f a better world into this incomplete second reconstruction that was started just a few years back. I f not, we are going to wind up in a w orld we th ou gh t we le ft behind forever. We cannot assume that the national swing to the right is unstoppable. Because if you assume that, you might as well be dead.” In a press conference, Grassroot News asked fo r the Congress w om an’ s reaction to the defeat o f the proposed budget put fo rth by the C ongressional Black Caucus, which would have left a 7.8 b illion amount o f politics in the game, the “ c h e m is try ” wasn’ t rig h t, and he was v ic io u s ly undercut by certa in people in the organization.
