ACT-SO competition
(Continued from Page I Col 3)
M is M et oy.
When Commissioner M e t by was
asked i f there shouldn’ t have been a
contingency plan in the event that
no one scores in the 90s, and
s h o u ld n 't the students have been
aware o f that plan, site said, “ When
you have to make a decision o l that
size under pressure, you very otter,
d o n 't make the best decision. We
were sim p ly caught in a s itu a tio n
w ith o u t a second p la n ." Stic co n
tinued to say that there needs to be a
wav to screen the students so that
I lie judges are not eaught by s u r
prise. She also said that she p e r
sonally leels that an apology to the
students is in order.
But s till, despite the com m ittee’ s
attempt to rectify things . . . still, no
one is going to the n ationals, (h is
decision on the part o f the judges
has b ro u g h t w ill, it at least tw o
serious q u e stio n s: I) Does this
decision im ply that Portland has no
Black ta le n t? 2) A re the judges
aware o f so m e th in g about the
caliber o f the national co m petition
from year to year. How else w ould
they be able to determine whether or
not someone is w o rth sending. In
re p ly to these questions C o m
missioner McCoy siad that this year
ACT-SO dealt w ith only 20 students
o f all the Black high school students
in Portland. “ Therefore I can’ t un
derstand how anyone co u ld co n
strue that to mean that Portland has
no Black talent.” She went on to say
d ia l the judges know about the
caliber o f the national com petitions
“ because they just get sharper and
sharper.”
Luscious H icks, president o f the
,_J
P o rtla n d B ra n ch , N A A C P , the
organization which originated and
sponsors the A C T -S O p ro g ra m ,
speaks on a q u e stio n a b o u t the
fu tu re o f the A C T -S O program in
light o f what has gone on. " I think
the im pact o f the s itu a tio n has a
very p o s itiv e p o te n tia l because it
creates a need fo r b e tte r co m
m u n ic a tio n between students,
coaches, etc., and a need fo r more
erystalization o f expectations. What
do the judges expect fro m the
students; what do the students ex
pect from the judges.”
I he I riends o f A C T -S O C o m
m itte e taised $4,000 to cover the
costs o f the competitions, publicity,
etc. and to cover the expense o f sen
ding someone to the nations. U.S.
N a tio n a l Bank gave a $3,000
challenge grant which was met . . . a
to ta l o f $7,000. The co m m itte e is
strongly considering investing the
money to better next year's A C T -
SO program.
It appears that the ACT-SO com
m itte e sh o u ld co n sid er the p ossi
b ility that the judges were ju d g in g
according to their own level o f ex
p e rtis e - ig n o rin g that the p a rtic i
pants arc high school students.
Perhaps the best explanation o f
the e n tire evening is expressed by
Master o f Ceremonies A rt A lexan
der. " I t seemed like it was a ease o f
judges losing their perspective and
carrying a well-intentioned principle
to an unnecessary extrem e."
As people left the a u d ito riu m a
participating student was overheard
expressing fru s tra tio n and anger
because o f what had happened.
Next week, we w ill talk to some o f
those students and their parents.
