Grassroot News, N.W.- An event will happen this Saturday, May 2nd, that is historical; the Creative Jazz Orchestra, under the direction o f Thara Memory, will be in concert at the Civic Auditorium. Under the management o f One World Arts, this musical history w ill reflect the works o f American and Afro-American composers. Thara Memory is the catalyst o f the Creative Jazz Orchestra and the only WEST COAST PICTURE CORP. 6806 N E Skidmore 282 72»5 Hours: 8-5 MondeySeturdey MASTERCHARGE VISA way to describe him is to call him a personality w ith a “ com m unity s p irit.” " I wanted to try and help revise the community culturally. One person can’t do it. So I fit, so that everytime someone points to me to do something, I make sure it spreads o u t,” said Thara. This sentiment was reflected in his work with the Portland Black Repertory Theatre. Thara has paid his dues in the Northeast and remains extremely indepen dent. He has popped up here and there, backstage as well as front stage as a talented horn blower o f first rate. He has seen the inside o f the recording business via o f his studio work, and knows they w ill do anything to bring about “ number one with a bullet." This doggie-dog business turns Thara o ff which is why he centered his talents in the Northwest. "T he record industry would have died had it not been for Afro-Am erican music. Disco went up and reached its peak. Now you can’ t get a major record company to record a disco disc even if you fronted the money. Now ask them about a new James Brown or Marvin Gaye, and their response will be when do we start? You see, its the little blocks o f sales that keep the record companies going," he con tinued. He sees most big stars in music as having no control over their product. “ If 1 even got hold of any o f that 1 would send half thé props back, half the lights, and half the people who run it, and ask for my money back. These things are big business and I think maybe it’ s even bigger than the con cert itself.” Using his experience to retain his perpective, Thara summed it up. " I ’ m talking about having your own. If it’ s just ten dollars - so what? It’s yours! I'm not going to look any different on stage making ten dollars or ten thousands. And making ten grand, the sad thing would be, to take home only $100 o f that. Big business w ill only do two things for you; put you out of business or let you support their business.” Thara’ s analysis o f certain procedures by some big name record company is essentially correct. We in the Northwest should be proud that this new breed o f artist picked our home as his base. On May 2nd, let’s show our ap preciation. Moore was in adminstration and education at Seattle Central Com m unity College before moving to Ohio. "L is te n to what students are saying and what they are saying is do not let me do my own th in g ,” Moore said. "T h e me-ism is dead. Doing your own thing was good for the ego but poor for the mind. Sit in the bars and talk to them. Sit in the barrios and talk to them. What you’ ll find is that doing your own thing isn’ t what they want. They want to learn how to read. They want to be able to write. They want to be able to figure.” M oore said that students need structure in the community college classroom with teachers who clearly let students'know what is expected o f them from the first day o f class to the end of the term. " I ’ m against all o f these op tio n s ,” M oore said, "W h a t he needs to do is learn to read because he can’ t read, to learn to w rite because he can’ t write and learn to figure because he can’ t figure. T h a t’ s an old fashioned idea. But that’s exactely what I mean.” Moore said teachers should not be overly sympathetic to student com plaints o f relevancy of a course. “ Don’ t let those students tell you w hat’ s relevant and w hat’ s not Work, play, sleep. Moore is a professor of educational administration at Ohio State University. relevant,” Moore said. “ That's fine in sociology and philosophy, but that’ s not fine in mathematics.” Moore said students still respect fa cu lty. "T h e y s till view you in higher esteem than you think they do.” Moore suggested these changes in approach to educating the disadvan taged student: • Less time spent in adverse inter action between fa cu lty and ad m inistrators. Realize both faculty and adm inistrators are after the same things. • Better marketing o f what we are doing in education. • Innovations that are concrete. The most innovative thing an English teacher can do is teach students what a verb is. • More counseling by the faculty, and less by counselors who are removed from the classroom situations. • O ffer a product which is as good as our claims. • Give more time to students. Moore said in a question and an swer session following his talk that he is not talking about becoming unreasonably tough in the classroom. "Be tough with the youngsters, but be tough with love,” Moore said. " It*s like being tough with your own children. You are tough because you love them.” C&H Sugar 5 It) B.XJ L mut On« Pineapple Juice lowr House 46 Ouw e Can 8-Pak Sweet Bread Pepsi Plus Dep Opta Ptl»8»ppl8 JvtCt Petals CMpt Ice Cream kings Hawaiian 16oz Loat Regular fret or Pepsi I iqhi 1 6 07 Btls 99 la cam a Atacada Dip Macadamia Nut Lucerne Dole Pineapple In Syrup Crushed Chunk or St* ed 8 25 0/ Mai .«danna Nut Halt Gallon 99 «2 3 II 49 Sataway Garden Shop Buys Pet Food Values Friskies Dog Food V 2 ‘1 Friskies Buffet 3 89" Fish Ahoy Dinner . *23’ Friskies Dinners 7. 3 ‘1 Friskies Dog Food ... „ , 9M Come’N Get It .’.'¡alîî» . . ^ ’ 1” Little Friskies ... . *23’ Mexican Food $ Safèway Variety Enlargement Beverage Shop Pr««S ÉWectrve Wad Apu« 21 Thru ’ ut» May 5 At AN Portland 66C ‘ 3’ 1 M” *3” ‘ 2” «1” Colgate Toothpaste »1” Kodak Color Film ‘"t 99‘ Pepto Bismol ” WS »1” 3 ‘ 1 Q Tip Swabs X : 98« »2»» 2»*1 Allerest W X .
