Sports Editor The N B A 's long season is slowly g rin d in g to an end. P h ila d e lp h ia disposed o f M ilw aukee 99-98 Sun day afternoon before a disappoint ing crow d o f 6,500, and now w ill m atch ta ien t w ith the am azing Boston Celtics. Sure, th is w rite r picked M ilw au ke e to w in it a ll and since that won’ t happen, at least not this year, then who w ill win it? On paper yo u ’ d have to go w ith Philadelphia but as we all know the 76ers, in the past, have always come up short in the biggies, and this is a biggie because the winner in the East is v irtu a lly a shoo-in fo r the N BA ch am p io n sh ip . A fte r a ll, aren t these two teams, Houston and Kan sas C ity, in the western finals, both o f whom are saddled w ith losing records? And d id n 't the Celtics and Sixers both end with identical 60-22 records, and boosted as the best in the N BA? So someone should tell Moses M alone and Calvin M urphy that they haven’ t a chance, because apparently they s till believe. A n d, too, K C ’ s Ernie Grunfeld and Scott Wedman should be reminded that their season should have ended long ago because they, too, believe and are playing lik e th ey’ re a ll-p ro or something. Your heart must go out to Cotton F itzsim m on s and his courageous Kings. A fte r losing th e ir best tw o guards (O tis B irdsong and P h il F o rd ) most everyone w ro te the Kings o ff. Everyone-that is-but the Kings themselves. They believed and made believers o f others by th ra sh in g the western conference champion Phoenix Suns in 7 games. P h illy should beat Boston in 6 games, w ith the inside power game being the difference. The key in this one has to be Darryl Dawkins. I f Darryl can get o ff the mark the Sixers in 6. But o n ly i f D aw kins plays w ell. Bobby Jones o f f the bench w ill clip the ’ ’ B ird ’ s '’ wings. I t ’ ll be a good one fo r view ers. Houston and KC w ill also be w orth watching. Give the edge to the awe some power o f Moses M alone and the deadly shooting o f Calvin M ur- pfcy- . , The pick here is F louston in 7 games. Kansas C it y ’ s Sam Lacey w ill try and n e u tra liz e Moses by b ring ing him out to the top ot the key. Lacey is e xtre m ely e ffe c tiv e there, where he e ith e r passes o r takes the ju m p e r, and Lacey w ill also drive the m iddle if the defense a llo w s. W hat we have here is to o very physical centers and it w ill be interesting. Again, the home court advantage w ill not mean a th in g . Both teams are capable o f w inning on the ro a d . C a lv in M u rp h y ’ s quickness should give KC ’ s guards a fit, and the game could be won right there. The heavyw eight b o xin g scene •lost tw o greats re c e n tly ; one to retirement, Muhammad A li, and the other w ith the death o f Joe Louis. But th ere ’ s tw o young ones on the h o riz o n th a t c o u ld make the decision g la m o rou s once again, M ike Dokes and Greg Page. Whereas neither fighter w ill come close to Louis or A li, they both are good and w ill som eday replace L a rry Holmes as cham pion. Dokes is s im p ly d y n a m ite and Page has shown lately that he’ s now ready to exert some power. Both young men has the size, 6-3 and both are bona fid e heavies, tip p in g the scales at 215 and 226 pounds respectively. A n d how a bo ut “ El T ia n te .? ’ ’ Luis proved he’ s not yet ready to be turned out to pasture by pitching a n o -h itte r against Spokane. T ia n t fanned 10, while walking just two in seven innings. W ith perform ances like these, Luis w ill be back in the majors in no time! DICK BOGLE Blazer draft looms I f the Philadelphia 76’ers win the N a tio n a l Basketball A sso ciatio n championship, guard Lionel Hollins would become the first guard in the history o f the league to be a starter on tw o d iffe re n t ch am pio nsh ip franchises. His first championship came here in P o rtla n d in the 76-77 season when the Blazers overpowered the rest o f the league on the shoulders o f B ill W a lto n , M au rice Lucas, Johnny D avis, L lo y d N eal, Bob Gross and Herm G illia m . Fam iliar heart warming names aren’ t they? It was tough saying goodbye to those fine young men, who for one reason or a nother le ft the confines o f M e m o ria l C oliseum to ca rry on elsewhere. Only Bob Gross remains and i t ’ s my thought it’ s going to be farewell tim e fo r him and one or two more “ present’ ’ Blazers. Stu In m an, Blazer d ire c to r o f player personnel, in an inte rvie w to ld me the num ber one d ra ftin g priority for the team w ill be a "good to great” shooting small forward. T hat sounds lik e goodbye to Gross and tough C alvin N att. The strange th in g is when N att came here at the ta il end o f the 79-80 season in a trade w ith New Jersey fo r Luke, he was putting the ball in the hole fro m 15 to 20 feet o u t. Remember we gave up Luke, an all- star power fo rw a rd , and tw o to p d ra ft choices to get N a tt. He was highly valued by the Blazer brass at the tim e who knew they faced a m ajor rebuilding job to become an honest contender. What happened? I t ’ s not exactely a secret th a t Gross has asked to be traded and Natt has stated publicly that unless he is included more in the offense next season, he would be more com fortable playing somewhere else. Even to the casual fan it was quite apparent that Natt and Gross had to w o rk fo r every p o in t they scored and that there seemed to be few, if any, set plays to take advantage o f their shooting skills. The sm all fo rw a rd s up fo r the d ra ft who are attracting the Blazer brass inclu de A l W ood, A lb e rt King, Je ff Lamp o f Virginia, Kevin Loder o f A lbam a State and K e lly Tripucka o f Nortre Dame. Inman says W ood is such a high quality player that he w ill go during the first five picks o f the d ra ft and could be the first pick, depending on which players declare hardship. Inman feels i f there’ s a long suit in the draft it is at the small forward position. He says he is not ecstatic about the available centers nor over whelmed by either the power f o r wards or the guards coming out o f college. He th in k s D a rn e ll V a le n tin e o f Kansas and Frank Johnson o f Wake Forest co uld be the firs t guards taken, unless o f course, Isiah Thom as o f In dia na goes hardship and becomes eligible for the draft. When he talks about power fo r wards, he mentions N otre Dame’ s O rla n d o W o o lrid g e and U ta h ’ s Tom Chambers. To me and a lo t o f other Blazer fans, the most obvious need is at the center p o s itio n and when I m en tioned this to Inm an, he adm itted the center p osition here does need upg ra din g. B u t, he says about 16 other NBA teams feel the same way and used the Milwaukee Bucks as an exam ple. Despite ta k in g Philadelphia down to the wire in the b a ttle fo r the d iv is io n c h a m p io n ship w ith big Bob Lanier at center, next year could bring harder times fo r M ilw a u ke e . T h a t’ s because Lanier is just about over the hill and his backup, Harvey Catchings is not type o f center to take a team to the final four in the NBA. He predicts Oregon State’ s Steve Johnson w ill be the firs t center taken in the June d ra ft and th a t means by the tim e P o rtla n d chooses, Johnson w ill be gone. M o re than lik e ly P o rtla n d w ill have picks 15, 16 and 26. Pick 15 w ill go for a small forward, possibly a center. Number 16 w ill go fo r the position not picked with 15, and 26 c o u ld end up going fo r e ither the best guard or best power fo rw a rd available at that time. A ll this could change in a number o f ways. The Blazers co uld put together a package o f a combination o f players and d ra ft choices just to m ove higher up in the selection process. T hat m ethod co uld land them the sm all fo rw a rd or center they really want.
