Bobbi’ s distinctive style as both flutist and vocalist showcased in her Epic debut LP Tailor Made, is heard to even greater advantage on Free Style, produced by Ralph McDonald and featuring such outstanding sidemen as Eric Gale, Richard Tee, Anthony Jackson, Steve Gadd, and a special appearance by Stevie Wonder. In 1973, Bobbi emerged as the “ Surprised h it” o f the montreux Jazz Festival, and gave birth to a beautiful baby girl, Ricci Linn, who adorns the cover o f the Satin Doll, LP. No music category could hold Stanley Turrentine for long. In three decades as a performer the only things that have remained constant are his ear for a tune and the distinctive sound o f his tenor sax, once described by a critic as a combination o f “ leather tone, rhapsodic lyricism , crying edge and aggressive confidence.” Turrentine never finished high school. Instead, he went on the road at age 17 w ith the band o f blues singer- guitarist Lowell Fulson, which was directed by pianist Ray Charles. The 60s found him recording on his own and working the ghetto lounge circuit with his then-wife Shirley Scott, while the 70s signaled his emergence as a bandleader in his own right. And, his sax is still the star o f the show on his new album In fla tio n , an electric collection o f blues, ballads and standards, hich includes two rare Turrentine originals. » ..
