O rag o n 07217 Ask Aunt Bea Dear Aunt Bea I am a first time grandmother and am delighted over it since, out o f my tw o ch ild re n , a son 27 and a daughter 33, my daughter gave birth to a little girl just 8 months ago, so it ’ s been a long time since I ’ ve had to deal w ith babies and the many situations that occur. My problem is advising my daughter how not to spoil her baby. She stays home with her all day and apparently holds her a lot and picks her up at every little peep she makes, consequently the baby is unhappy w ith anyone else, but M om m ie, even Daddy has a hard time with her. I t ’ s obvious M om m ie and baby have become too attached. A unt Bea, what advice can I give? Grandma Dear Grandma, I can understand your problem and daughter’ s too, her being a first Mommie too. She, I’ m sure, thinks she's giving her baby all the love and attention she needs, however, she must understand that she's doing more harm than good by doing this. Since you can see it, she must be feeling the impact to, so discuss the matter with her in a friendly, helpful way (no t in an in te rfe rrin g man ner). E xplain the im portance o f teaching her new baby to be in dependent, and secure w itho ut Mommie’ s arms around her all the time. She must learn to be com fort able with others too, especially dad dy, otherwise, Daddy may not feel wanted by them. Tell your daughter to let baby cry a little, as long as all is well, it surely w on’ t h urt her. A lso try a baby sitter in the home or a neighbor or even a nursey fo r an hour or two, several lim es a week, u n til baby a learns the delight o f being social and independent. I ’m sure all concerned will be a lot happier! Good Luck! Aunt Rea Dear Aunt Bea I’ ve been married 6 years now and when my husband and 1 were first married, we discussed everything. We’ d sit and talk fo r hours and I didn’ t do all the talking. He use to talk to me too, but now instead o f discussing anything he tells me to make the decisions or take care o f whatever is at hand. When he comes home from work, he rarely has but a few words to say to me. I, sometimes get the feeling he no longer cares to be part o f me, but he has little to say about that too. Please advise. Jan N. Portland Dear Jan, On the contrary, it seems to me you’ ve taken care o f him and all else so well in the past, that your husband probably doesn’ t feel the need to bother because he knows you’ ll do just fine. As far as his not having much to say, men, for some reason, tend to feel that after a few years together, everything has been said and clam up. So it ’ s up to us to remind them o f changing times, and feelings and personalities and there is still a need to com m unicate. So change your tim e and tone o f voice and just maybe, h e 'll take notice and maybe, he'll take notice and com ment.
