residential d istrict.

fo llo w in g reasons fo r p ic k e tin g .
“ W e th in k th a t th is is one o f th e
worst examples o f the way the Black
c o m m u n ity is being e x p lo ite d . The
theatre shows the kin d o f movies on
a m a in stre e t we d o n ’ t need. T h e
theatre is ju s t using this co m m u n ity
fo r its ow n selfish purposes. We say
the fo rm a t o f the theatre ought to be
ch anged to show m o v ie s th a t are
p o s itiv e ad th o se film s th a t
p o sitive ly reflect on the Black co m ­
m u n ity .” H e rn d o n responded to a
q u e stio n re g a rd in g the F ro n t s k ip ­
p in g o f here and th e re on issues.
“ T h a t w o u ld be tru e i f we w eren’ t
s till w o r k in g on a ll th o se o th e r
issues. N o w the c o m m u n ity has a
m iddle school. Before the F ro n t got
involved there was no m iddle school
and forced one-way bussing. In the
area o f the police, because o f a suit
file d last year, the P o rtla n d P olice
D epartm ent w ill ce rta in ly be fo u n d
g u ilty o f d iscrim in a tio n . We are s till
p ro v id in g a p olice h o tlin e and get­
tin g p eople in to u c h w ith la w ye rs.
N ow rem em ber a ll those areas s till
need w o rk and we are s till w o rk in g
o n th e m . Just because yo u are in ­
volved in other issues, doesn’ t mean
th a t y o u c a n 't q u e s tio n a w ro n g ,
because we as a c o m m u n ity , are ex­
p lo ite d by m any d iffe re n t people in
m any d iffe re n t ways.”

W a ln u t P ark Theatre stated that the
F ro n t’ s activities have h u rt business.
