tee is encouraging young Black
women who will be at least 18, and
not more than 25 years of age by the
national pageant date to apply.
I he young women who w ill be
crowned the second Miss Black
Portland by 198O’ s reigning queen,
Sonya ( oleman, must be a high
school graduate currently enrolled
in a college, university, business or
technical school She must not have
been married or given birth to a
child. She must also be a resident of
Oregon, as she w ill represent the
state in the Miss Black America
pageant.
I he pageant w ill provide an op­
portunity for a young Black woman
to further her educational and
career goals with scholarship funds,
wardrobe, and other gifts con­
tributed by the local business com­
munity.
I he pageant committee under the
direction ot Mrs. Grayce Kennedy,
an advisor with the Portland
Development Agency, will welcome
the participation and involvement
>1 the entire community in choosing
the next Miss Black Portland.

Schools seeks
advisory
members
Applications and petitions fo r
positions on the Area I and Area II
Citizen Advisory Committee for the
Portland Public Schools are now
available to residents o f the school
district.
Area Advisory committee mem­
bers are chosen by the school board
in June. The two committees advise
their respective Area Superintendent
and make recommendations to the
school board regarding issues which
come before the committees.
There are two ways a person may
apply for a position. The first is to
gain 30 signatures on a p e tition
from within the area which they will
represent. The second is to be
nominated by a school advisory
committee in the appropriate area.

The P IL basketball league has
completed a 360. In the past, the In­
ner-City kids were thought of as just
a bunch o f run and gun kids with
lots o f talent but no discipline.

and Grant are all smooth running
teams that put a special emphasis on
team play. Benson, coached by Dick
Gray, is the best team in the P IL
and probably the State. The Tech-
men have ten guys that come at you
like so many Kamikaze Pilots. They
are unrelentless in their attack on
defense and very smooth and
deliberate on offense.
A. C. Green, 6-7 center is just as
good or better than any big man in
the State. Green has been virtually
unstoppable all season. Against
number one Hillsboro, the big pivot
man was responsible for single
handcdly getting the entire Spartan
front line in foul trouble. Benson is
