By Ron Sykes Sports Editor APPROXIMATELY 105 USED VEHICLES Extremely unfair and unjust were the words used by U o f O grid coach Rich Brooks when it was learned Monday that the PAC-10 Council had voted to deprive three Ducks of eligibility for the entire 1980 foot ball campaign. Those named were ju n io r wide receiver Rick Ward, ju n io r defensive tackle Gerald Haynes and sophomore back - up quarterback Andrew Page. It's u n fa ir to this w rite r that Oregon should be h it so hard whereas prim a donna USC was barely touched for similar offenses. It's especially hard fo r Page, the highly recruited young QB, who missed one year already due to a bone injury. Ward, a walk-on, was expected to start and Haynes, the 265 pounder out o f New Orleans, was expected to o ffe r a stern challenge to start at tackle. The N C A A had issued lesser penalties and the people in Eugene was led to believe that all was done, this announcement M onday was stunning and now the three involved must make a hasty decision on whether to continue at Oregon or transfer and petition for eligibility at the new school. Chalk up another sad day for Duck football... Two national television dates will be featured in Oregon State’s 1980- 81 basketball schedule, along with 13 home dates at Gill Coliseum. I * 1 ia championship, a feat that w ill be hard to duplicate this year, and top 10 ranking o f last year, Oregon State has been picked fo r two national TV dates this coming season. The Beavers w ill first appear on national TV against perennial Eastern power St. John’s on Satur day, Feb. 14, in New York and again on Sunday, March 1, against top PAC-10 challenger U C LA in Los Angeles. The Beavers 28 game schedule brings them to Portland for the Far West Classic plus a single contest against Portland State at Memorial Coliseum. Why this one was scheduled is beyond my realm o f thinking. Unless, however, coach M iller is looking for playing time for his bench. OSU w ill open it ’ s 1980-81 season on Saturday, Nov. 29. The OSU-BYU game is set for a 7:05 tip-off and will immediately be followed on radio by OSU-UCLA football game from Tokyo, Japan. Just have to wonder why the PAC- 10 chose this obvious mis-match to showcase fo r the Japanese. The game will undoubtedly be a rout for the Uclans. Far West Classic: Oregon vs Cal- State Fullerton; Drake vs Utah. In the bottom bracket, Oregon State takes on Northwestern from the B ig-10, while independent Rhode Island goes against the Ivy Leagues Princeton Tigers. O akland Raiders have been denied their move to Los Angeles, at least for one year, and are now busy trying to sell tickets fo r the up coming season. A ll this has caused bitter feelings among the once loyal Oakland fans. Most o f the bitter ness, by the press, has been hurled in the direction o f managing partner A l Davis. It is Davis who has worked the hardest to bring about the move to L.A . One local writer voiced the following opinion. ’ ’ Af- ter this season, Davis should be allowed to go to Los Angeles. If there were ever a city and a man that deserved each other, i t ’ s Los Angeles and Davis. W hat difference w ould one more w et-look make down there?” Dickey continues, “ There are two ways to accomplish this: one is by letting Davis move the Raiders and giving Oakland an ex pansion franchise.’ ’ A better way, I think, is to let Davis have an expansion team in L .A . and keep the Raiders here; w ithout Davis, I think the special relationship the team and fans once had could be renewed. B altim ore has narrowed the Yankee lead to only 2Yi games in the American West. Hopefully the Yanks can hang. GOVERNMENT SALE BY AUCTION TO THE PUBLIC is a great h itte r, bu, Reggie is Reggie. The Boston P atriot’s secondary came under unrelenting attack over the weekend from the Oakland Raider offense. In all fairness, the Patriots are missing Mark Haynes who is holding out which leads to my quote o f the week. When asked whether Haynes was missed, “ The m other............ was A ll-P ro fo u r years in a row, “ growled corner- back Ray Clayborn. “ HTiaf do you th in k? " It was learned last week that Darryl Motley, currently playing for Jacksonville in the Class AA League broke his left hand after being hit by a pitched ball and is on the way back home, finished fo r the season.
