Artist paints Black scientists
Noted Black artist and illustrator
Ernest Crichlow has been com-
missioned by CIBA-GEIGY Cor-
poration to paint a series of por-
traiu of ellceptional Black scientists.
These ponraits will be made into
posters and distributed by Cl BA-
GE l G Y to schools, colleges and
organizations to help commemorate
the achievements of Blacks in scien-
ce and medicine.
The initial series, which consists
of three posters, will honor chemist
Dr. Percy Julian and physicians Dr.
Charles Drew and Dr. Jane Wright.
The late Dr. Julian made
significant re~earch contributions in
many areas, including the develop-
ment of a synthetic drug for
glaucoma, the discovery of a more
economical way to utract s1erols
from soybean oil for the manul'ac•
luring of sex hormones, and the
development of a better method of
producing cortisone synthetically.
Dr. Drew, who died in IIJSO, was
a pioneer in the field of blood
preservation whose research led 10
the founding of blood banks. In
World War II, he organized the
blood for Bruain proJect and later
directed the first American Red
• Cross blood bank program.
Dr. Jane Wriaht is currently
professor of surgery at the New
York Medical Colleae. Since 1949,
,;he has specialized in cancer
chemo1 herapy research and was
director of the Harlem Hospital
Cancer Reseau:h Foundation and in
charge of the chemotherapy
program al New York University
Medical Center. She has received
numerous honors for her con-
tributions 10 cancer chemotherapy
research.
Crichlow 1s a New York artist
~ ho currently resides in Brooklyn
and leaches at the Arts Studenl's
l.eaue. He is best known for his
penelrilttnll portraits of Black
children. ilc has also illus1ra1ed
many children's books, including
the popular" Two is a Team."
Long-active in helping other
Black artists, Crichlow was a foun-
der ol the Cinque Gallery in New
York, a gallery for young artists
t rom disadvantaged backgrounds.
fhe artt~t•s works have been shown
111 numerous exhibitions, most
recently a1 a special show at the
Corcoran Gallery in Washington,
D.C.
In recoanition of his con -
tributions to art, Crichlow was one
ol 10 Black ar11sh commended by
Pre,;idenl Carter at the White House
reception for the National Con-
t"erence of Artists on April 2.
SA presents concert series
The Sin1in1 Gospel Li1hts of
Portland, Oreaon will present four
monthly one evenin1 Gospel con-
certs on July 20th, Au1ust 17th,
September 21st, October 19th, and
November 15, 1980. The concerts
are co-hosted by the Salvation Army
Moore St. Community Center, and
will be held every 3rd Sunday
evenin1 from 7:30 p.m. to J0:30
p.m., at 5430 N. Moore Street,
Portland, Oreaon 97217. Appearina
with the Sinain1 Gospel Liahts will
be delepted sinaers, choir aroups,
and special inspirational speakers
from throu1hout the 1reater
metropolitian area.
Special out-of-town 1uests will be
announced on The Sin1in1 Gospel
Li1hts reaular broadcast on KGAR
and other radio stations. Donations
are S3.00 per person for each of the
four concerts.
Proceeds from the four concerts
will be individually donated to one
of the
four
humanitarian
or1anizations in the followina
order:
l. The Gospel Train Broadcastina
Service, (KGAR), 2. The United
Front Educational Service, 3) The
Urban Leque Educational Service,
4) The NAACP Educational Ser-
vice.
The climu of the four concerts
will conclude November 15, 1980
with an Award dinner. Refresh-
ments after each concert are free
and a open invitation is elltended to
all members of the community to
support those or1anizations
dedicated in the struaate for a
quality education and equality for
all.
A REMINDER
On June 28th at 7:30 a.m., and June 29th at 10:00 p.m., the Black produced
and hosted show "Di11l0111~" will present a fiery debate between Ronnie
Herndon (Black United Front) and Fr■n k McNamera (Portland Public
School Board member). Our sources informed us that Mr. McNamara comes
across exactely as the Black community knew he would, when confronted
with issues important to the Black community. The show is hosted by Ob~r-
11~r reporter Ullysses Tucker, Jr, and is a KPTV-Channel 12 presentation.

The Aaaocletlon of Afrlcen Student has scheduled a number of soccer
matches 10 be played this summer between various teams representin1 the
African countries. The inter-country soccer matches are desianed to
stren1then the Association of African students team which is currently
trainina at the Duniway Park Field, SW Barbur/Sheridan Road. The
schedule date is as follows: Saturday, June 29, the Somali Buffalos will lake
on the Sierra Leone Lions, Saturday, July 5, the Nigerian Sharks will lock
horns with the Libyan lroaa1es. Kickoff will be at 4:45 pm al the game venue.
Friends, fans and supporters are cordially invited. There is no admission

Women• Club1 will be held on June 28th at Mt. Olivet Baptist Church, 1st
and Schuyler Streets, beginning at 9:00 a.m. A lunch will be held at noon,
learnina outdoor survival skills.
Time will also be spent in urban en•
vironments, exploring all the oppor-
1 unities within the city and em-
phasizing the appreciation of urban
environments.
The second week of each session
will emphasize practical ellperience.
Participants will work directly with
the Day Camp children, along with
the reaular staff counselors.
Says Nelson, "We want to em-
phasize the idea that this program is
meant to be fun. It will give these
teenagers a chance to aain valuable
work experience, learn some new
skills and have fun •· without having
to give up the whole summer.•'
Participants are encouraaed to
sian up for more than one session as
the focus will vary from one week lo
another, and continued ellposure to
children is important if you are in-
terested in day camp work. Says
Nelson, "Ellposure is important.
The more ellperience you have with
children, the more you enhance
your knowledge of them and in-
crease your chances of lindin1 em-
ployment in summer day camp
programs in the future."

Counsellor training available
"If you are 13 or 14 years old, en-
joy being with children, want 10 get
some work ellperience and have fun
at the same time, the YWCA may be
the place for you this summer, "
says Paul Nelson, Coordinator for
the YWCA Summer Day Camp
Program. This summer the YWCA
will offer "Counselor-in-training,"
a new program for 13-14 years olds
who would like to combine work
ellperience and fun.
The program will beain on June
16 and continue through Auaust 15.
Panicipants will meet three days a
week for two week session at a time.
Participants may sign up for as
many sessions as they want 10. Cost
of each two-week session is S4S.
The emphasis of the CIT program
will be on trainina these 13 and 14
year olds in skills that are useful in
working with children. The program
combines both outdoor campin1
and backpacking and urban ell·
periences. Participants will also
have the opportunity to work first
hand with the children enrolled in
the YWCA Day Camp.
During each two-week session,
the first week will be spent training
participants in different skill areas.
