Francisco The most tacular loan o f Black A frica n art ever made to the United States w ill be on view at the C alifornia Palace o f the Legion o f H onor from A p ril 27 through June 29, 1980. Under the patronage o f the G overnm ent o f N igeria, the e x h ib itio n is entitled "T re a su re s o f A n c ie n t N ig e ria : Legacy o f 2,000 Years. " The un precedented th re e -c ity to u r is possible la rg e ly because the Nigerian Museum in Lagos is now constructing a new wing. The o ne -h un dre d o b je cts, in cluding Benin bronze plaques are the earliest West A fric a n art discovered o n ly rece n tly k . by a r chaeologists, represent a span o f history which predates the Golden Age o f Greece and the b irth o f Christ. Two o f the rarest works, a pair o f bronze leopards, were royal symbols o f the Kingdom o f Benin. Another splendid bronze is a por trait o f a queen o f Ife (1200 - 1500 A .D .), cast w ith technical virtuosity th a t rivals the best w o rk o f the European Renaissance. Hood Community College o f fers one o f the only three funeral ser vice educational program s in the West. Two C alifo rn ia institutions, one in San Francisco and one near Los Angeles, are providing similar training. The closest schools outside o f Oregon and C a lifo rn ia are in Oklahoma and Minnesota. Interships are a standard and valuable part o f the M ount Hood funeral services program, according to Walter Thorsell, funeral services instructor. "In c lu d e d as part o f our curriculum is an intership experience which in essence utilizes a local funeral home as a lab setting tor in stru c tio n ," Thorsell says. Students who w ill graduate in May spend 16 hours a week w orking in funeral homes and attend seminar discussions once a week at the college as part o f their internship. Mount Hood students have nearly completed th e ir tw o-year course before they go into the field. Prior to academic education most states require apprenticeships fo r funeral service applicants. Apprenticeships and interships are different in several ways. An appren ticeship, explains Thorsell, precedes classroom education, is a state requirement and is state run Inter ships are college courses and do not apply to w ard apprenticeship requirements. "Interships are a non-paid class in struction method," he says, "as op posed to an apprenticeship which is truly an on-the-job position, paid ex perience.” Thorsell believes there is value in both the apprenticeship and intership roles. A pprenticeship allow interested persons to view their proposed job by participating in the work situation. They invest a relatively short time before their formal education begins. In this way, some find out funeral service occupations are not for them at all, and are spared the expense and time investment o f college, only to find out during an internship that they made the wrong choice. "A n internship is the application o f classroom theory to a practical set ting,” he adds. During that period, all the course work o f two years comes together and the accum ulated knowledge and skills are put to use. The M ou nt H ood program is designated a lim ited entry program w ith a m axim um o f 30 in the graduating class. This year 20- students will graduate. Even through M HC C draws students from a wide geographical area, the college does not receive more applicants than can be accepted. Thorsell credits this to the apprenticeship program, allowing a natural screening out process. Without it, he believes, more students would start the course without clear knowledge o f their career goals. Students in the M o u n t H ood program finish w ith the education necessary to apply for two licenses, one as a funeral director, the other as an embalmer Oregon will accept one or the other. Some states require a combined license referred to as a mor tician’ s license Thorsell believes there are severe lim itations fo r a person who has just one o f the two licenses ” An embalmer's license requires one year o f professional schooling in special funeral services courses, while funeral service directors must have two years o f higher education, not necessarily in professional subjects. For instance, a funeral services direc tor's license could be applied for by a college sociology major. Licensing requires the completion o f an apprenticeship period and the educational requirements. Applicants must then pass required tests and pay a state fee. The em ploym ent p icture fo r funeral services personnel is favorable. "R ig h t now jo b oppor tunities are as good as they have been since the program started,” Thorsell says.
