More than 50% o f the Nicaraguan p o p ula tion over ten years o f age are unable to read or write. In some areas o f the country this figure tops 90%. One o f the firs t acts o f the Government o f reconstruction and the FSLN was to announce the N ational Literacy Crusade which begins March 30. The Crusuade has as it ’s goal, the elimination o f illite racy in Nicaragua, by mobilizing all in the country who can read and write to go out and teach others. The Nicaraguan people know that a new Nicaragua can only be built with the active participation o f a literate well-educated population. The Association o f Nicaraguan W omen, “ Luisa Am anda Espinosa” (named after a re vo lu tio n a ry fig h te r kille d by Somoza’ s national guard) was founded in September o f 1977 to defend human rights in Nicaragua ,__, E L and denounce the brutal crimes of the Somoza d icta to rsh ip . It organized mass meetings o f protest and demonstrations and called for a national women’ s week in March 1978. It became a mass women’ s organization which organized large open air gatherings, petition cam paigns, and demonstrations. Many women p a rticip a tin g in the W omen’ s Association were also working with the FSLN to defeat Somoza. A fte r the victory o f the Sandinistas, the Luisa Amanda Espinosa worked to begin re constructing the country. A rticle II, Section three o f the Statute on the Rights of Nicaraguans says: " A ll persons are equal before the law, and have the rig h t to equal p rotection. There shall be no discrimination on the basis o f b irth , race, co lo r, sex, language, religion, opinions, economic position, or any other social c o n d itio n .” A d d itio n a l statutes provides working mothers time o ff with full pay before and af ter birth, and the right to child care provided by the state while she is at her place o f work. The Association o f Nicaraguan Women is working to see that all these provisions are im plemented as well as helping to rebuild the country. The Portland Nicaragua Support Com m ittee has been w orking to provide information about the new Nicaragua and to aid in whatever ways possible the on-going re construction efforts in that country since A p ril 1979. The Committee has sponsored several slide shows, film showings, benefits, and public speaking events.
