FROM THE SIDELINES home furnishing«* By Kathryn Bogle Documents o f African Culture, the tw o-day symposium offe re d by the Portland A rt Association, drew admir ing throngs to the P ortla n d A rt Museum recently. The Gebauer C ol lection was presented as a social document and it spoke powerfully to those o f a mind to listen. The occasion also allowed the public to learn o f the p u blication o f the book, ‘ ‘ A rt o f Cameroon” , w ritten by the late Dr. Paul Gebauer who lived for 30 years in the Cameroon!. Mrs. Clare Gebauer, who worked beside her husband in A frica fo r the many years they spent abroad, came from her down-state home to attend the tribute to the contribution she and Dr. Gebauer have made to the field o f African studies. Public interest in learning, viewing, and collecting examples o f the authen tic art o f ancient A fric a has gained considerable momentum w ith in the last few years, although the influence o f African art on the work o f many ar tists has been in evidence since the turn o f the twentieth century. With the (iebauer collection access ible to all o f us in Portland we can become acquainted with the messages sent to us and borne across time and space to the here and now about the universality o f m ankind, about style and fo rm , about perfection and q u a lity, about human fra iltie s and strengths, about power, about family life and the satisfaction o f personal achievement. And about the soul o f a people. The majesty in intricate p rim itive design in wood carvings and molded metal speaks compelhngly o f old wise men and ancient tires. It’s there to see. And to hear. If one listens. The symposium, funded in part by the Oregon C om m ittee fo r the Humanities, was a success far beyond the numbers o f persons in attendance during that short period. Many w ill return again and again and w ill bring others with them to visit the Cameroon room, and they, and we, will listen to the distant sounds. (Photo: Richard Brown) • • • Swaziland in Southern A frica is the destination o f Mr. and Mrs. Cleophus Smith as they leave Portland this week. The Smiths will spend Christ mas with their daughter and her hus band at their home near the campus ol the University o f Swaziland. Their son-in-law, Dr. Wilhelm Godfrey-Sam- Aggrey, is head o f the Agriculture Dept. at the University. A native o f Ghana, Dr. Godfrey- Sam-Aggrey received his doctoral degree in Agriculture from the Univer sity o f California at Davis. He and his family w ill eventually return to their home in Accra, Ghana when his teaching stint in Swaziland is com pleted. The Smiths are expected to return to Portland sometime in late January. An interesting lady with an interesting job that many might covet was in the city recently. Her name is Rosalyn Mc Pherson Kelley. She was here as a member o f a team o f six editors from the Editorial Staff ol the M cGraw-Hill publishing company o f New York City. McGraw-Hill sent the team to Port land to the H ilton to represent the firm in acquainting the membership o f the National Council for the Social Studies with the latest publications o f M cGraw-Hill in the field o f Social Sciences. The thetne for the conference for these academicians was “ Bridges to the Future.” Mrs. Kelley helped to set up her firm 's exhibit and arranged for small group sessions for conferen ce members. Mrs. Kelley spent off-tim e periods with her aunt, Mrs Osly J. Gates. Mr. and Mrs. Wilson C. Walker are spending the holidays in Honolulu with their son Wilson P. Walker but expect to be back in Portland after the big New Year's football games are won—and lost. Invitations are out for holiday dan cing after the feasting is over. Some will dance at the A K A hall and others will swing with the members o f La h'ernme. Those with unusual luck will do both!
