PNB employee's plan wins award Franck Metellus, an accounts cxe- cuuac for Pacific Northwest Bell, re cently was the recipient o f the com pany’ s Max Johnson award fo r "M o s t Innovative Systems Solu tion.” Mctellus, a “ team leader” in the company’s department that is con cerned with the wholesale consumer market, has the direct responsibility for the smooth working arrangements between the telephone company and 430 o f its wholesale accounts. One of the largest accounts in the care o f Mctellus pays $25,(MX) per month for the services in communi cations it receives from PNB. The company is anxious that all o f these LUDIE M ARTIN (Photo: Terry Robertson) customers are pleased and getting the maximum o f service from the equip ment installed in their plants by PNB. Constant updating o f ser vices is an integral part of marketing there. It was for one of the smaller accounts that Metellus devised a solution for a bothersome problem. The firm 's intake calls, sorted and delegated by computer, were rear ranged by a plan devised by Mctellus, allowing a faster and more uniform distribution resulting in bet ter service to that firm 's customers. The small firm was gratified to find it had an increase in revei ue through the unique solution and expertise o f this PNB accounts executive. Mctellus has been with PNB since 1974 when he joined the organization fresh from Marquette University and the University o f Oregon which he also attended. Metellus started with the telephone company as a communications con sultant for their business customers, but he also has been a part o f the Personnel D epartm ent, hirin g management personnel for positions with PNB around the state. This lat ter position also requires him to recruit from colleges within the state. Likin g variety in his telephone company career, M etellus has Portland Observer Thursday. PPL rate hike faces hearing A hearing to determine how much each class o f customer should pay as a result o f a recent rate increase granted to Pacific Power & Light Company (PP&L) has been set for July 16th. Public U tility Commissioner John Lobdell called the hearing for 10:00 a.m. in Hearing Room D o f the Labor & Industries B uilding in ' Salem. Robert Miller o f the Com missioner’ s Proceeding Division will preside. PP&L was granted a 7 per cent rate increase May 31st. Lobdell allowed tariffs to go into effect that increased rates 5.6 per cent for resi dential customers, 8 per cent fo r commercial customers and 11.5 per cent for industry. He said, however, that questions remain about how the rates should be spread among the customer classes. A ll intervenors have been invited to testify at the hearing along with the company and the commissioner’ s staff. Lobdell said that since there is a possibility the rate spread may be changed, he intends to make a decision by August 1st. The overall increase o f 7 per cent is not at issue in the July 16th hearing. Lobdell earlier said the company had ju s tifie d a need fo r ad d itio n a l revenues and authorized the increase without completing the formal hear- ig^ process. But he said he would call fo{ separate, formal hearings on two issues raised in the five public meetings held in connection with the cane- the rate spread and “ lifeline” rates. Hearings on proposals fo r “ life lin e ” rates w ill be scheduled before the end o f the year. The decision to grant PP&L a rate increase without completion of the hearing process has been appealed in M arion C ounty C irc u it C ourt in Salem by the Ratepayers Union and others. A hearing on the suit, which is a request for an injunction, has been scheduled by the court for July 9th Oregon City Shopping Center 856 9727 <fC<Vl Or» S Andaraon. ( Bnpgs. A Haaqwel, K Israel.
