Librarian Julius Snowden A CAREER IN COM M UNITY SERVICE Portland Fire ureau American State Bank Mar)' Rose Dean died in Portland on June 21, 1979. She was born in Birmingham. Alabama or. April 29, 1913. After attending school in Bir- mingham. she attended the Madame C J Walker Beauty School. She was m arried to Benjamin Dean. Sr., in 1937. The couple had four children: B enjam in, J r., a holder o f a Master's o f Public Ad ministration from New York Univer sity, a private businessman and a re sident o f New York; Gloria Ella Dean Brown, hair stylist and manager o f Dean's Beauty Salon; Kay Dean Toran, a manager with the Department o f Human Resources, Oregon; and Rose Dean Bryant, an agent with United Airlines, and a resident of Seattle. Washington. After moving to Portland, Mrs, Dean continued her beauty practice and in 1933 she and her husband opened Dean's Beauty Salon and Barber Shop She continued in business until her illness in June o f this year. Mrs. Dean was active in the Morn ing Star Baptist Church. The funeral was held June 23th at Vann's Chapel, with Reverend Lee Arthur Madison officiating. Burial was at Rose City Cemetery. This year's program will be super vised by Mrs. Vesia Loving with Ms. M argaret Bikman teaching. Five high school students will assist. Parents and others willing to help are urged to visit the Reading Tree.
