The Boston Celtics are the fo rm e r N B A C ham pions and it is th e ir hope th a t th is m a rria g e w ill restore them to that previous lo fty perch. B ird ’ s d o w ry is rum ored to be in the v ic in ity o f $650,000 per year. The celebrated bride, L a rry B ird , vowed that he w ould rem ain loyal to the Celtics and also prom ised not to seek dissolution fro m this n u p tia l fo r at least five years. W ith the announcem ent o f the B ird un io n it is w idely believed that ‘ Big M a c' w ill get his w a lkin g papers. “ I ju s t d o n 't kn o w where M c A d o o w ill fit in w ith this c lu b ,” said new coach B ill Fetch. M c A d o o ’ s a lim o n y fro m the C eltics w ill be sub stantial. It is believed by m any that pA B o b w ill re ce ive a p p ro x im a te ly $550,000 per year. T his a lim o n y w ill be paid by Boston u n til M c A d o o is united w ith another mate. There are at least five teams interested in M ac's services. " H o p e ” as defined means " a feel ing that w hat is w anted w ill h a p p e n ." The Boston Celtics have d ra ft ed a " h o p e ” w h o happens to be “ w h ite ” and that is w hat is needed, by Boston. But w ill w h a t's wanted — a cham pionship — happen? The a n swer here is no. W hat is needed in B oston is m ore than the B ird can give. The C eltics s till m ust acquire a legitim ate center. Dave Cowens, was never that, and now w ith age ra p id ly catching up on h im he appears now to be o n ly a shadow o f h im se lf. B ird , lik e C ow ens, stands o n ly 6 '8 ” and neither can give the team w hat it really needs. I ’ m n o t sure i f th e h ig h ly a c c la im e d G e n e ra l M anager, Red A uerbach, is a ll that c o m p e te n t. S u re , we k n o w th a t “ Red” was a good coach b u t he has yet to prove that a b ility in his jo b as General M anager. N ow the real college “ player o f the y e a r" the 6 ’ 8 ” guard w h o led M ic h i gan State to the 1979 N C A A C ro w n , and was d ra fte d and signed #1 by the L a k e rs , “ M a g ic " J o h n s o n , w ill m ake his presence k n o w n early in the NBA. Johnson, the superb super soph, can do it a ll. A n d rem em bering w hat Dennis Johnson's re b o unding and all a ro u n d gam e has d o n e f o r th e Sonics, then one ju s t has to w onder what Johnson can do fo r L A — p la y ing the same role as DJ. That is a guard not o n ly p e rfo rm in g in the backcourt but h ittin g the boards and b lo ckin g shots as w ell. T h e L a k e rs , e v e ry b o d y k n o w s , need re b o u n d in g h elp fo r Kareem very b a d ly and E a rv in c o u ld very w ell f ill th a t need fro m the g u a id p osition. A n d ju s t th in k w hat Jabbar w ill do w ith the “ M a g ic ” lo ftin g those b e a u tifu l passes his way. N o rm N ixo n , w ho has p ro b a b ly grow n in to one o f the best N B A guards around w ill also b e n e fit by the on c o u rt presence o f “ M a g ic .” N ixo n , now w o n ’ t have to be relied on solely to bring the b a ll dow n co u rt. Now the speedy, hot shooting, 6 ’ 2 ” product o f the streets o f New Y o rk w ill be allowed to m ove do w n co u rt and also be ready to receive some “ m a g ic ". Los Angeles should be helped im mensely by the " m a g ic ” man. The hardship phase o f the N B A d ra ft was h eld W e d n e sd a y, b u t th e biggest player has already been plucked . . . " M a g ic .” G eorge S c o tt, h a r d - h ittin g firs t baseman fo r the Boston Redsox, and benched in late M a y has rep o rte d ly asked M a n a g e r D o n Z im m e r to “ play me o r trade m e.” The 35-year- o ld Scott was b a ttin g a weak .224 fo r the season before h ittin g the splen dors. Scott should realize that o n ly 20- year-olds arc a ffo rd e d the lu x u ry o f h ittin g that lo w and rem aining in the M a jo rs. O r perhaps, B ig G eorge should call the 40-year-old " B ig M a c " o f the San Francisco G iants, w ho also became glued to the G ia n t bench a f ter a spectacular season last year. W hen yo u ’ re aging you produce, or else, it seems that no one wants to listen and be rem inded o f a ll those good years you gave to the club. O h, w ell, such is life in the M a jo rs.
