Freda Walker: Honor student, athlete Freda Michelle Walker, the third and youngest daughter o f James Walker and Mrs. Jeanette Walker Mason o f San Francisco, was among the graduating high school seniors presented by Links, Inc. at the 1979 Starlight C otillion held earlier this year at the Sheraton Hotel. Presented by L in k s , w ith her father as sponsor, Freda has made an enviable record for herself at Jeffer son High School as well as in the out side community. At Jefferson Freda has been on the honor roll quite consistently, and is a member o f the N ational H onor Society with her name featured for the past two years in "W h o ’ s Who Am ong Am erican H igh School Students." Her name also appears in the 1978-79 edition o f the "Society o f D istinguished H igh School Students.** Close to Jefferson student ac tivities, Freda is a member o f the school’ s Speech Team, she worked on the Prom and Graduation Com mittees and was a member o f the senior class Steering Committee. She likes to write and acted as anchor- woman on "Jefferson on the A ir ” television show broadcast from the school's studios. School sports also drew Freda’ s a: tention and she won the big “ J " let ter for four years for her prowess on the track team. She was the 1977 Oregon State Junior Olympic cham pion in both the 100 and 200 meter dashes and she won a bronze medal in the 1977 junior Olympic National C ham pionship in L in co ln , Ne braska. Her trophy case has many awards she has garnered. Freda also played basketball for the Jefferson Democrats and won the " M o s t Hustle” award fo r her quick and sharp manueverability on the court. Proving that she really docs hustle. Freda again won the "M ost Hustle” award at the Portland State Univer sity Women’s Basketball Camp. Popular among her own school classmates, Freda was a varsity cheerleader with a membership on the "S u p e r S ta r" squad o f the " N a tio n a l Cheerleaders Asso- ( --------------— ------------- \ LOOK FOR THE BIG “ 1 " c ia tio n .” F urther evidence o f Freda’ s p o p u la rity among her classmates was shown by her being chosen as Jefferson’s Homecoming Queen, and by her winning a place on the school’s Rose Festival Court, and again by her being crowned as Jefferson’s May Queen. Outside o f school, Freda lent her tim e to the com m unity by par tic ip a tin g in Y W C A a ctivities. Beginning in 1975, Freda first sub stituted for an older sister, Ronee, at a YWCA Teen Conference. This par ticipation was so impressive that Freda was one o f twelve girls in the nation elected as a National YWCA Teen Leader. She went on to become a nominee as the member-at-large for the Western Region o f the United States. She was a voting delegate to the National Convention in South Bend, Indiana, and was a participant in the National Forum on Women in New York City. S till w ith the Y W C A , this vivacious 18-year-old has been a guest o f the National Board o f the YW CA on eight different occasions. A u d itio n s fo r P o rtla n d Black Repertory Theatre’ s production o f N tozake Shange’ s passionately feminist spellbinder, “ For Colored Girls who have Considered Suicide/ When the Rainbow is Enuf” w ill be held by appointm ent June 8th through 18th. I d UOYDCM TH HH0BOBEIQ00 As a sophomore, Freda was one o f the state’ s fifteen finalists for the Hugh O ’ Brien Youth Scholarship Award, and she won the Portland O ptim ist Youth Aw ard fo r Com munity Service. Freda holds memberships in the National Council o f Negro Women, the Albina Christmas Party Group, the NAACP and the Jimmy “ Bang- Bang” Walker Knockout Spikers. Freda has chosen her college for her entry this fall. Fisk University w ill welcome this young lady and she expects to attend Fisk as a Political Science major.
