A p ril 12. 1979 Good Friday service planned The Albina M inisterial Alliance and the Union Fellowship of Churches are combining efforts to provide spe cial Good Friday Services fo r the Albina Community and others in Portland at a time most convenient for all to come and worship together. The service is scheduled to be held at Bethel A .M .E. Church. 5828 N.E 8th Avenue, the Reverend L. Fisher Hines is the Pastor. The Good Friday Services begin at 7:30 p.m. Reverend O .M . Peavey, Pastor o f the First African Methodist Episco pal Zion Church w ill be delivering the sermon. Everyone is invited to come and participate in this service. This marks the firs t tim e the Union Fellowship o f Ministers and Churches and the Albina Ministerial have joined together to bring such a service to the people o f the com munity. Plans are underway to bring more community-wide religious ser vices sponsored by several churches to the people o f Portland. The Reverend John Garlington, Pastor o f Maranatha Church is the President o f the Albina Ministerial Alliance and the Reverend Austin V. Ray. Pastor o f Hughes Memorial U nited M ethodist C hurch is President o f the Union Fellowship. The American C ivil Liberties Union's Awards Dinner, at which former Governor Bob Straub will receive the E.B. Intercambio Cultural Exchange Program. Host families are being sought for fifty Mexican boys and girls ages twelve through seventeen who want to visit for two months this summer in Oregon. Host families must have a child the same age and kind as the Mexican student. Hatfield w ill speak to a Citywide neighborhood meeting on Wednesday, A p ril 18th about his proposed Neighborhood Government Act and the increased role o f neighborhoods in determining their own future. The meeting w ill be held at 7:30 p.m. in the cafeteria o f Washington-Monroe High School, S.E. 14th and Stark, and is sponsored by the Buckman Community Association. Senator Hatfield has proposed that Federal income tax money be turned over to neighborhood corporations which would then provide govern ment services to their residents. He first introduced the legislation in 1973. The Early Childhood Education/Head Start Program, sponsored by the Port land Public Schools, is now recruiting f o r the ¡979-80 School Year. Head Start is a federally funded program for three and four-year-old children from low- income families. Eligibility is based on federal income guidelines. N utrition, mental and physical health, and social competencies are stressed along with education and developmental skills. A t least 10% o f available space is reserved for handicapped youngsters. Although preference is given to four-year-olds, three-year-olds with assessed needs are also admitted when eligible. A p plications may be completed at the Head Start Office at 220 N.E. Beech Street. Governor Victor Atiyeh w ill be the special guest at the Legislative Report Breakfast this Saturday, A pril 14th in Gresham which is sponsored jo in tly by the Gresham Area Chamber o f Commerce and the area’ s three local legislators — Senator Vern Cook and Representatives Sandy Richards and Glenn Otto. The breakfasts are held every other Saturday at the M & M Restaurant, 137 North Main Avenue in downtown Gresham, a block north o f Powell Boule vard. The BOOST Educational Talent Search Program w ill be sponsoring a career inform ation workshop April I7th, from 4:00-6:00 p.m. in the Cafetorium o f the King Neighborhood Facility, 4815 N.E. 7th Avenue. A t the end o f the workshop the students will participate in role-playing activities which will acquaint them with the interviewing process.
