Musical director brings experience to "DuBois' Ken Berry is a musician’s musi cian. He is widely known in the Port land community for his service; he gives his talents so freely that one is likely to have the pleasure o f hearing him sing or play the keyboard twice in the same day at d ifferent oc casions. Presently, Berry is preparing the musical score for "D uBois,’ ’ an oral history program presented by One W orld Arts Foundation, Inc. The production features Herb Cawthorne as Dr. DuBois, and traces the life o f this great man. It will be fast-moving and entertaining. The movement and entertainment is directly related to the power o f the musical direction o f Ken Berry. Berry, who directed the New Hope Baptist Choir in One W orld’s pro duction o f “ From the Pulpit, From the People: The Life and Ministry o f M artin Luther King, J r.,’ ’ a year ago, has brought together a fo r midable musical ensemble. Some of the finest voices in Portland will per form some o f America’s finest music to com plim ent DuBois, one o f America’s finest scholars. Anise Hat! lends her well trained talents to the production and gives sensitive power to the program ’ s theme, “ Be Grateful.” Debra Baker will highlight the in spiration o f DuBois with a moving arrangement o f “ God Bless the C hild.” Ira Hammond, a widely renown perform er, w ill sing, “ Some Day We’ ll A ll Be Free.” His voice and style in this unique arrangement gives added meaning to the words o f a great man. Seated, left to right: Debra Baker, vocals; Ken Barry, musical director; and Ada Jack- Ada Jackson will bring her beauti ful tones to the words o f " L if t Every Voice and Sing,” and she w ill be assisted in this finale by Ken Berry and the rest o f the musical team. Berry sings “ Johnny, I Love You,” following a short statement by DuBois on the mix o f education, Come Today and SAVE! ho m e fu rn is h in g s race and the South. ‘ We have discussed the meaning o f the program,” said Berry, “ and we all agree that the music is an im portant part which tells the story that adds to the quality o f Dr. DuBois’ words. ” The program, scheduled for March Sih, 9th, 10th and 11th at PSU’s Lin coln Hall Auditorium , is the second oral history production put on by One World Arts Foundation, Inc. The music will be beautiful. And the greatness o f Dr. W.E.B. DuBois will be revealed. fa m o u s , to p q u a lit y Whirlpool (Continued from page I col. 4) against the Black community instead o f towards it. The Crime Prevention Unit and the Buckman Safety Net work, an ad hock neighborhood crime prevention group, jo in tly developed a series o f crime preven tion postors fo r educational use around the city. One o f the posters, which provides in fo rm a tio n on harassment and in tim id a tio n , is definitely in bad taste. It reinforces derogatory racial stereotypes. The implied message is that Black and other minorities continue to be the perpetuators o f crimes against whites; they are the enemies o f a healthy society. The fact that no one working in the Crime Prevention Unit was sen sitive to the negative implications o f this particular illustration is sym ptomatic o f the problems that exist between the community and law en forcement interests. I f the local crim e prevention program is ever to achieve the broad p a rticipation o f the Black com munity, law enforcement agencies and crime prevention groups must demonstrate that they are as concer ned about the well-being o f Black neighborhoods as they are about white victimization. They must work closer with the Black community to eliminate the subtle and devisive crime sterotypes in all aspects o f their public education process. They must become more sensitive to the Black community’ s legitimate con cerns about its image. The Crime Prevention Unit owes the community an apology. It should carefully review all o f its crime prevention literature to ensure that it does not contain other derogatory racial characterizations. It should take greater pains to insure that public money is not used in the future to perpetuate unhealthy racial stereotypes. This kind o f inadvertent racism does not serve any o f Por tland’s citizens well. In fact it under cuts the true aim o f crime preven tion, which is to generate citizen cooperation and provide factual in formation onthe nature o f crime and its prevention. Use o f this poster should be discontinued; this would be a step in the right direction.
