About Portland observer. (Portland, Or.) 1970-current | View Entire Issue (Feb. 1, 1979)
Sports Talk hand. People often referred to him as “ the bandit” a name supposedly given him for his ability to steal the ball. He should have been more ap propriately called “ the one armed bandit” for his insistence on using, and going to the right all the time. It’s not my intention to knock Mr. Steele but I just can’t understand how the tans can adore a person who’s so lacking in NBA skills. Larry doesn’t possess a jump shot, still uses a set shot a la the 1950's. His foot speed reminds one of a new horned antelope. But he does huslte . . . but, then anyone can hustle, almost. Believe me if Portland’s front of fice announced tom orrow that Lionel Hollins had been traded for “ pistol pete" you wouldn’t hear a negative voice among the fans. Disparity in Portland . . . you bet. And speaking of Lionel Hollins what a game he had against Dr. J. and the 76ers. Lionel was 14-16 from the field, 5-6 from the line, 12 big assists, 3 steals and 33 points. Lionel was superb to say the least. On this day it was all Hollins — he did orchestrate, motivate, and was flowing as easy as the Snake River in early July. “ I’ve felt good shooting for several games now,” beamed Hollins. And when “ Train” is on track there’s none better in the entire NBA. “ I’m just now playing without injury,” said Hollins, “ and that does make a difference in my game. I’m feeling good." And looking good is the young man from Arizona State. Hollins is now beginning to push the ball upcourt like he did in the past . . . now he’s blowing past people again in the usual Hollins style. With Hollins and Lucas playing well and the rookie Ron Brewer coming on strong one would wonder “ what’s wrong with Portland?” The answer is Tom Owens. That’s Hooray!!! I'm back! And aftei 2'4 months it’s good to be back. You see my favorite columnist was a little under the weather for awhile, but am now feeling chipper again! So much for the bad times now let’s look at the good. And the good this time of the year is the Pittsburgh Steelers, everybodys choice to whip the Dallas Cowboys and did they ever 35-31 in the best game ever played. Oh yeah, the best team won . . , and the difference was in the receiving end . . . Lynn Swann and John Stallworth ,. . period. Speed is the name of the game as the big men clear the hurdles at the Oregon Invitational Indoor Track Meet. (Staff photo: Abubukar) « p On Wednesday, January 24, 1979, the Portland Trailblazers hit the bot tom of the Pacific Division by losing a heartbreaker to Lloyd Free. Oh sure, others played that night for the Clippers, but it was the high arching bombs of Sir Lloyd that finally sealed the coffin on the hapless Blazers. Not that Portland played so badly because they didn’t on this night and there were some wierd calls near the end to help Lloyd and crew. Rumors have flown for days now that Portland was seeking a deal for small forward and big guard, Larry Steele. Immediately the Portland fans rallied around Mr. Steele the oldest, in length of service, of all the Blazers. It’s sad to see this happen. Not the trade, but all the fans clamoring for a player that should have been gone years ago. And why Steele remains as a Blazer is a mystery to me. To be fair let’s examine his skills. Or better yet, perhaps, his lack of skills. Larry has survived eight seasons of NBA and instead of pouting should be thankful. Number one fault lies in his inability to handle the ball. Steele was actually a starting guard along with Geoff Petrie and couldn’t then and can’t now dribble with his left right, Tom Owens. And the sooner Ramsey stops trying to fool himself and the fans by saying “ Tom can pluy center in this league,” the better. For all it’s worth Tom Owens is at best a good back-up center . . . and to indicate or pretend he's more is just plain ridiculous. Owens is only offense-minded and looks for the shot and nothing else. What every NBA team needs, if they arc to contend, is a dominating center, one that blocks the middle and not allow all of those easy lay ups. Owens can’t jump and doesn’t have good speed. He can score, however, und thut is all. He's an op portunist and can help out when coming off the bench in a back-up role. The trade of Steele wouldn’t be a big mistake as some people think. The big mistake was when they traded Johnny Davis. That was u biggie. W ater Added | | |> Indoor meet draws champions The 19th Annual Oregon In vitational was held January 27, 1979, at the Memorial Coliseum and as usual the field was dotted with many International entrants. The University of Oregon men’s track and field team, after getting outstanding performances in two in door meets last weekend, entered 16 athletes in the Oregon indoor meet. Their usual contingent of distance runners was led by Rudy Chapa, who finished first in a strong mile field that included last year's indoor meet superman, WSU’s Henry Rono. Rono, after receiving a generous round of applause from the Coliseum’s usually knowledgeable crowd, finished a distant and disap pointing fifth. Rono, the lithe Kenyan, com plained of a severe sore throat which undoubtedly hampered his perfor mance. University of Oregon’s Chapa, running smooth and easy, com pletely outdistanced the field. This year’s format was different, having the prep events dispersed throughout the program and giving the youngsters some much needed publicity. Jefferson’s girls 640 yard relay team finished second in their heat failing to take advantage of a drop ped baton by eventual winner Hills boro. G ran t’s squad, running in the second heat and anchored by Jackie Jackson, last year's 100 and 200 yard champion, turned in a brilliant 7:19 clocking to easily outclass the field. Don Colem an, who finished second in the 60 meter race at the Moscow, Idaho, Vandal meet last Saturday, was entered but finished third. M argarine Nucoa . . . Quarters JCoMbrook 1-lb. 38c) 1-lb. Pkg.
