I I P»B« 4 Portland Obaarver Thursday, January 4, 1979 Book aids children’s reading Dr. Altec M. Anderson, assistant professor o f education at D illard U niversity, has announced the publication o f her book — “ With the ABC’s o f Phonics I W on’t Lag,” According to D r. Anderson, a D illard alumna and holder o f the M.S. degree from Indiana University and Ed.D. from the University o f Southern Mississippi, her book was born out o f need “ to generate to parents — simple, direct and con crete phonics skills which they must teach to their children at home.” “ The contents w ill assist parents,” she continued, “ in answering their role as their children’s first and most important reading teacher. Teachers who wish to form a partnership with patents fo r the development o f reading independence w ill also find the book insightful.” The 200 page publication com prises 104 lessons presented so that the application o f a given phonics concept evolves out of acquired sight words as well as words within the I c h i l d ’ s s p e a k in g / lis t e n in g vocabularies. R eproduction o f speech sounds in isolation is en couraged and instructions for ar ticulating these sounds are inter spersed throughout the book. Also included, is a process for blending speech sounds to enhance the ability to read and spell independently. According to Dr. Anderson, one o f the unique contributions o f her book is “ the continuous dialogue between the teacher and the learner. Experience has taught that through active participation, children learn more, retain more, and become more enthused about that which is taught. Continuous dialogue, in contrast to teaching phonics in silence is more vib ra n t, more direct and more promising.” Inquiries about the book should be directed to Dr. Aitee M. Anderson, D illa rd U niversity, 2601 G entilly B lvd., New Orleans, Louisiana 70122, or (504) 944-8751, Ext. 224. PRESENTS A N A M A Z IN G LOSS DEVICE. Most of us shudder at the thought o f offering diet fare to guests, but there is a solution. Ap petites cry for simplicity at this time o f year. Whether your guests are counting calories or not (and many people are, without talking about it), everyone loves shrim p. Shrim p has a reputation for excellence in taste, but not everyone knows how superior this shellfish is in the nutrition depart ment. Shrim p has h ig h -q u a lity, easily-digested protein, is an ex cellent source o f many essential minerals, and has small amounts o f the B vitamin group, while being low in fat and calories. In the easily-prepared but delicious-to-eat Shrim p and Asparagus Luncheon Salad, a tangy marinade is used to blend the flavors o f the shrim p, asparagus, water chestnuts, and celery together into an out-of-this-world combination. A f ter the m arinating and ch illin g (about an h o u r’ s tim e), the vegetables and water chestnuts are arranged on crisp salad greens, and the shrimp are perched on top.
