He put the "best of himself ’ into the service he gave to his country as pan o f his per sonal philosophy. I T I if ¥ 7 V Kenneth Dukes Kenneth Dukes chose his army duty. He chose to be a cook. His shoulder patches indicate he was a corporal attached to the infantry. As were many Northwesterners, Ken was sent first to Fort Lewis — where the inevitable separation by race oc curred. Dukes drew transportation to Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri and there he remained for the ba lance o f his two-year stint. A “ survivor” type, Ken Dukes says he holds no regrets for his choice o f duty while in the army. W ith his characteristic flash o f humor Dukes admits that he had no wish to return to Fo rt Leonard Wood, a spot deep in the Ozarks where temperatures could rise to 110° in the summer and could slide to 20° below zero in the winter. But he did express satisfaction with his work and his performance o f duty. Negro 99th fighter squadron. Deu became a veteran o f 93 aerial combat missions in thirteen months t overseas as he helped make the 99th ' a name to be feared by the enemy. General M a rk C larks* 5th army asked that this Negro unit be assigned to cover the American land ing at Anzio. They patrolled, flew bomber escort, and dive-bombed in making their numerous assaults. Lt. Carl Deiz received his primary flight training at Tuskegee Institute. Deiz, a track star before grad uation at F ranklin High School, had been enrolled at University of P ortland at the time the United States entered World War II. He was drafted in early 1942. Carl returned to University o f Portland when his war service was over and was graduated ’ ’ magma cum laude” from the school o f business ad ministration. At Tuskegee and at Miami Beach where he received his commission, Carl was pleased to see old friends o f the Northwest: Billy Bell, William L aw , Richard Stanton, H aro ld M orris, W alter Reynolds and his own brother, Robert, in among the strangers and newer acquaintances. Lawrence Campbell and W irt M or ton were also old friends. Tuskegee honors Chappie James the A ir RO TC Offices have been a bee-hive o f activity in planning the General "C h a p p ie ” James Room dedication at Tuskegee Institute on November 12th, at 2:00 p.m. The impressive array o f n atio n ally- known guests confirming attendance include G eneral Titus C . H a ll, General Rufus L . Billups and General Raymond B. Furlong. The renown color Guard o f Maxwell A ir Force Base will present colors. “ This dedication will establish a lasting memorial to a great American and outstanding graduate o f Tuskegee Institute,” stated President L . H . Foster. G eneral D aniel “ Chappie” James “ distinguished himself in service to our nation and the ‘ Chappie* James Room w ill always serve as m o tivatio n to Tuskegee students, staff, faculty and visitors.” General James was named chairman o f Tuskegee’ s national Centennial Campaign by the Board o f Trustees. The James Room is permanently housed in Institute library and will be open to the public and to students and scholars. Portland Public Schools serving students in preschool through Grade eight won’t hold afternoon classes during parent-teacher conferences on November 14th, 16th and 20th. On those three days, students will be released three hours earlier than they want. The seminar is set up to show them how and where to go for jo b s, em ploym ent counseling, preparation o f a resume and veterans benefit programs that can help them in their pursuit of a career. The “ C happie James R oom ” dedication ceremonies will take place in the Tuskegee Chapel on Novem ber 11th at 2:00 p.m. and is open to the public. He also had the responsibility o f drilling airmen and for the evening parade on the base. In itia lly the base had a white Commanding Officer and white in structors but gradually this situation was changed to add more Black o f ficers. This included the Base Com mander who yielded to C .O . Ben jamin Davis Jr. The planes in use at Tuskegee at that tim e were P T -1 3 ’ s — open cockpit planes with single engines — where the instructor sat beside his student in the cold air. Carl remem bers that the many layers o f warm clothing they were bundled into so hampered their movements that they had to be boosted and pushed down into the seat to get in. To get out of ten meant expending energy to wriggle out o f a close fit. A far cry from the controlled pressure planes o f today. Deiz enjoyed his service experience, particularly for the discipline learn ed. One o f his favorite quotes is: “ Discipline is that mental attitude and state o f training that makes proper conduct instinctive under all conditions.“ M ajor Robert W . Deiz, an A A F pilot in World War I I is alive and well end living in Columbus, Ohio. Bob was a track star at Franklin High and he held the 100 and 220 yard state high school records. He played the big bass viol in the Port land Junior Symphony and later played the bass horn w ith the Columbus Orchestral Society. When he attended University o f Oregon he held a stellar place on the track team. A t the very beginning o f the war, hl January 1942, Bob enlisted in the A ir Force.
