Jefferson High School’ s Performing Arts Center opens its 1978-79 season
with Dance Spectrum from San Francisco. These spirited, versatile artists,
directed by master choreographer. Carlos Carvajal, promise two enchanting
evenings o f contemporary ballet — the kind o f showmanship and
professionalism which appeals to practically everyone, and comes at affordable
prices made possible through joint sponsorship by the Portland Public Schools,
the Oregon Ballet Council and the Oregon Arts Commission. October 27th or

Lutheran High School of Portland is sponsoring its Third Annual Cruft and
Food Fair on Thursday , Friday, and Saturday November 2nd. 3rd, and 4th. It
will be open each day from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. The Fair will be held in the
gymnasium o f the school on the corner o f S.E. 162nd and Division.
The Oregon Alliance of Black School Educators (OABSE) is sponsoring the
Second Annual Fall Educational Conference on November 3rd and 4th at the
Red Lion Inn, Jantzen Beach. The conference theme is “ The Challenge of Legal
and Political Issues to Black Educators.” Friday’s keynote speaker is Legrand
H. Clegg, California attorney, researcher, and co-author o f the work, “ The
Black Roots o f King Tutankhamun." Workshops w ill convene on Saturday at
9:00 a.m. Registration fee is $30.00 and is handled by Addie Haynes at 288-

Northwest Service Center, in cooperation with the Northwest District
Association, is sponsoring a panel discussion on ballot measures 6 and 11 (tax
relief measures), 8 (reinstating the death penalty), and 10 (abolishing LCDC)
on Thursday, November 2nd, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. in the Northwest Service
Center Auditorium located at 1819 N.W. Everett. Moderating the event will be
Ben Padrow from Portland State University. Speaking on the above measures
and answering questions w ill be: Mayor Neil Goldschmidt, Congressman
Robert Duncan, former-Governor Tom McCall, Tonic Nathan (Chairperson,
Libertarian Party o f Oregon), John Alltucker (Chairman, Citizens Committee
to Protect Our Land), Ray Robinett (Washington County District Attorney).
An exploration of alternative healing methods w ill be offered in a "H olistic
Healing Celebration" at the Portland Downtown YW CA, October 28th, from
10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Eleven workshops are being presented by local
specialists in the fields o f chiropracty, acupuncture, palmistry, massage,
naturopathy, polarity therapy, mid-wifery, homeopathy, iridology, nutrition,
meditation, and stress reduction (223-6281).
The Pacific North west Twisters, the consolidated Portland area team, invites
Portland to the First U.S.G.F. sanctioned Class III Regional Invitational for
girl gymnasts. It will be held on October 28th at the Tigard High School Gym
nasium. There will be morning and afternoon pre-lim sessions for the sixteen
invited teams with finals held that evening. The performing teams come from
Hawaii, Montana, Washington, Idaho, and Oregon.
A Film documenting 170 years of Black history in Oregon w ill be presented
“ free to the public on Wednesday , November 15th at noon. The Film highlights
such events as the First Black settlers, the exclusion laws, and the Vanport
flood. Filmmaker Ed Geis will talk about the making o f the Film. The showing
will be held at the Matt Dishman Center on 77 N.E. Knott on Wednesday,
November 15th at 12:00. The public is cordially invited.

Northeast Eighth and Skidmore Street
w ill celebrate Homecoming Day on
the Fifth Sunday, October 29th. A

in this Homecoming event.
Homecoming activities will begin
