Portland Observer Thursday, April 27, 1978 Page 9 Do-it-yourself with basic tools The “His *N Hers" - a unique kitchen ior couples who cook. I t meets the lifestyle of f today's working couples "that enjoy and share joint food preparation activities and) gourmet cooking." The spacious and modem kitchen is designed in contemporary I Black and w hite, with chrome and bold yellow accents and overhead spotlighting o f' work areas. A kitchen for couples who cook Designed for the working husband and wife, the “His 'N Hers” kitchen is a clean, contemporary design that affords versati lity and a visually exciting area for today's household pair who enjoys and shares joint meal preparation activities. Its "open" planning, brightness and unique lighting fixtures emphasize the utmost sculptured contemporary layout of the kitchen. A self-clean oven and a built-in microwave oven replace the tradi tional double wall oven at one end of the modified U shape kitchen. A refrigera tor-freezer is located at the opposite end. Flowing into an illusion of a “V,” the versatility of the “His ‘N Hers" kitchen is highlighted by a mixture of “activity centers" that enable it to function as many kinds of kitchens. Snack bar area functions as a fast, easy breakfast kitchen. While he is plugging in the coffee she is pouring the morning juice and buttering English muffins for the toaster-oven. A movable cart for storage of small appliances can be rolled to wherever these appliances are needed. As dishes are used, they can be placed in the undercounter dishwasher, and stored for later washing with a full load. Ensured of having a complete break fast, the busy couple can catch the weather and news on the portable TV. For an evening meal or party, the versatile "His ‘N Hers” kitchen expands to the cooktop he can use along with the wall oven. She is preparing salad at the large sink near the refrigerator. There's also a trash compactor positioned central ly to receive throwaway items as they appear during preparation of a meal. On weekends, when time is more available, “His *N Hers" kitchen becomes a “gourmet kitchen” for more extensive culinary forays. Its marble slab and chopping block function as a convenient 30 inch high mixing center, and can be used as a work surface while seated. Completing the kitchen is a 20.6 cubic- foot refrigerator-freezer and single bowl sink with disposer. An assortment of additional special features enhance the sculptured appear ance and contemporary design concept of the “couple's kitchen." These include an acrylic shelf above the bar area, a narrow shelf that goes completely around the kitchen a few inches above the counter. Between the counter and narrow shelf, a stainless steel backsplash reflects what ever objects are on the counter. The counter is extra deep. Home improvement is more than new siding or a fresh coat of paint, a remodel ed and modernized kitchen or bath, or a newly wallpapered bedroom. It’s also more storage shelves, faucets that don't drip, and lighting fixtures that work properly. Or it may be a plain old dresser made like new with trim of carved wood moulding. These improvements are just some of the "easy ones” to tackle day in and day out. But they are tasks that can be just as rewarding when done as finishing the aitic to provide more usable space. And they require only the simplest of hand tools - measuring tape, saw, soldering gun, screwdriver, multi purpose adjust able wrench, and tongue and groove or “utility” pliers. These are the basics of a practical workshop, to be used over and over again. So it makes good sense to put top quality at the head of your list when shopping for tools - only the best will give you long years of satisfactory ser vice and prove to be a worthwhile investment. Some of the quality tool brands you’ll find in the shops and toolkits of profes sional remodelers and service technicians are wrenches, pliers and screwdrivers; measuring tapes and rules; saws and soldering guns and irons; and nutdrivers and wire snips. And you'll also find them at your hardware or home improvement center in a wide variety of types and sizes. It's true that quality tools cost more than the "garden variety,” but as with other products, you get what you pay for. There's no real economy in buying a 6" screwdriver for $1.19 that won't do the job because it soon has a loose handle and a chipped or bent blade. It is wiser to make an investment of $3.00 and be sure of quality performance and avoid replace ment for years to come. The same applies to all types of hand tools - quality saws hold a sharper edge - longer; the better power tapes and folding rules are more accurate and break resistant; well de signed and made soldering equipment with heat-resistant handles and fine balance are more comfortable and easier to use. REMODELING YOU CAN BE PR O U D OF by DAK As soon as you start acquiring good tools, begin to organize your workshop - a “catch all" kitchen drawer is a poor substitute for a wall-hung piece of peg- board and an assortment of hanger fixtures so that all tools are in view and readily at hand. And you can add pegboard sections as you undertake new improvements and get more of the homeowners' common craft and fix-it tools. You're sure to find uses for a pair of snips to cut gutters and downspouts; pruners and mower; a hacksaw for metalwork; a screwdriver for Phillips- slotted screws; backsaw and miter box for cutting true angles; long nose and wire-cutting pliers; and a narrow taper- ed-blade keyhole saw. Now you are equipped to meet most any challenge to improve your home. If you keep your tools in good condition and use them only for the purpose each was designed to perform, there’s practically nothing you can't do, and do well!! V ” a V. ' \ Hi Plant dahlias Thus« who are looking for a large brightly colored, vigorous perennial for that certain spot in the yard, should consider the dahlia. Dahlias, planted in full sunlight and given a little annual care, will add color and interest to the summer garden. Dahlias can be used as summer hedges, screens, filler plants among shrubs, mass border color or in containers. Dahlias are most generally purchased as bedding plants or as tubers. They should be planted after frost danger is past and when the soil warms enough for fast growth. These plants want full sun or light afternoon shade. When planting in clay soil, amend the heavy soil with peat moss or compost to give the dahlia a better growing condi tion. At planting time work 1/4 cupful of bone meal or 5-10-10 fertilizer into the bottom of the planting hole. Then add several inches of soil before placing the plant or tuber. Dahlias vary in size depending on the variety. Small growers can be planted a foot apart. The tall, bushy types should be spaced three or four feet apart. The tall varieties often need staking for support against wind gusts. Drive a sturdy, tall stake into the planting hole, then place the tuber horizontally in the hole with the bud pointing toward the stake. As the plant grows, use soft plant tie material to loosely support the stems with the stake. To grow a nice bush and harvest a crop of large, colorful flowers, it is hard to beat a dahlia. LOANS.
