f 6 Portland O bserver Thursday. August 25. 1977 Sports Talk Survey begins — Football season is rolling around again, and in high school and college the same old scene is present. A ll the football players are working extrem ely hard w ith the knowledge that they have an equal chance of earning the starting job at th eir respective positions. A ll except one position. As every person w ith any football knowledge knows the quarterback posi tion in foothill is dominated by one type of player. It's a sad, but true fact that most coacher. at any level, across this country feel that their teams cannot operate without a white quarterback. Take for example the case of M ike Stennis of Los Angeles. Stennis was an excellent high school quarterback. All- C ity, w ith splendid speed. 4.6 in the forty yard dash. Stennis was heavily recruited by both USC and U C L A his Junior and Senior seasons. But both schools dropped him cold when he let it be known that he wanted to play exclu liv e ly at quarterback. The two power house schools, noted for their strong backfields, probably had intentions of putting Stennis in the backfield, as a running back. This is usually the fate of most Black quarterbacks that come out of high school. Those fortunate enough to play quart erback in college are not reaily that fortunate. Aside from not getting enough recognition from the media, as compared to their w hite counterparts, they have very shm chances of playing quarterback they head for the professional ranks. Remember Greene from Ohio 9 u te . He played exceptionally well as quarterback in the Senior Bowl, y e t he was forced to try and play receiver in the pro ranks. Unfortunately Greene was cut. There are a few who make it at quarterback, but the road is rough, consider James H a m s . E v e r wonder how the champ stays champ? Just ask Muhammad All. For quite a w hile A h has been criticised by some for not fighting competitive oppo nents. M aybe it ’s not the opponents, but AU who decides the competitiveness of his fights. E a rn » Shavers, for example, is pro bably lightly regarded by the public and seems only as another easy pigeon for Ah. But in reality S h av en is highly regarded by A h. In fact A h respects Shaver's punch, which Ah says is harder than both Foreman's and the great Sonny Liston’s, th at he is studying five of Earnie’s previous fights. Taking into account th e fact th at of Shaver’s 52 knock-outs, nineteen have come in the first round, and thirteen in the second. Ah w ill probably hang on the ropes in the early rounds w aiting for Shavers to tire. The great ones don't pick uncompetitive opponents, they just make them look uncompetitive. A survey designed to gather informs tioa on w hat residents consider to be th eir needs in the areas of business, education and training, programs for youths and senior citiaena, w ill be con ducted in the area bounded by N .E .
