■* A Ta We see the world through Block eyes Equal Court was tasad trite wkhhy The Associated General Contractors are initiating a program to search out minority contractors and invite them to bid on building sub-contracts.On the surface the idea might have some merit, but the words of the AGC equal opportunities committee choirmon.Frank Word. — "Big Brothers" - spell trouble. We can't impune the motives of AGC at this point, but we can see the dangers, if minority contractors become dependant on AGC — on organization mode up of the some white contractors who have not thus far not chosen to use them as sub-contractors — how will they be sure that their interests are being guarded? if AGC decides which jobs minorities are "qualified" to perform, who will watch AGC? Linder this program it would be easy for AGC to use the more compliant contractors and their agents ond to refuse or "forget" those who are more militant in their quest for their fair share. Some minority contractors do need assistance in some areas — but while getting it they had better look out for their own interests and not be coopted by the majority. !■ » •< rights af J fa, ■Big Brother* p re g i« « i» ik iite s ta ilir y irifa s i. ta s ta te « tessa ta offset botara passage s f tee C h i Righto A rt. The district advisory boards and the staff have approved the tracks which the School Board — locking the four votes needed to pass the plan with two members absent — deferred it for later consider ation. Board members Beverly York and Wally Priestley questioned the trock expenditure. The problem seems to be that the money is alloted to the three areas on an equal basis, without regard for need. The areas that have more older deteriorating buildings that need wiring, plumbing, or painting must use their share of the renovation funds for those needs. Areas that do no* hove many of those problems can spend their share on "all weather" tracks. As desirable as "all weather" tracks and other new facilties would be. they are really not what the voters intended when they passed the special levy for renovation and repairs. A more equitable method of making essential repoirs would be to determine priorities district-wide. Thank you, Jimmy Congratulations to Jimmy Carter for shutting down the B-l Bomber program.
