Law is an Oregon State University associate professor of food science and technology stationed at the Astoria Sea food Laboratory. He has been trying to develop new ways to diversify the North west fishing industry, and one of his solutions may be more ways to sell smelt. Smelt are small, silver fish whicl\ annually migrate from the Pacific Oeean, up the Columbia River to the Sandy River in Oregon, and the Cowlitz, Lewis and Kalama Rivers in Washington, where they spawn. Sports fishermen rush to the rivers to dip for smelt with nets and buckets, but commercial fishermen, who catch about 1 Vi to 2 million pounds of smelt each year with gillnets and dipnets, see them as a questionable resource because of econom year. Fish appear to be avoiding the Cowlitz “All plants that handle fresh fish also and only small numbers of smelt have will handle smelt but by the end of the been reported in the Lewis and Kalama season the price usually has dropped Rivers. We canned some last year and our taste panels indicated they thought it was pretty good." Law said. The only hitch in the Agricultural Experiment Station project has been in Applications for short term summer convincing the smelt to cooperate.
