James Jones. Herschell West. Fred Hilton. Johnny Comeaux and Larry W right it amounts to well more than a mouthful. “T erry Sykes was our bellwhether last season. Ha had a terrific year and performed well above our expectations. He has shown remarkable improvement and is without question one of the top basketball players in the country." Hobdy unreservedly rem arked recently. ~ A junior now. T e rry Sykes will be the man counted on to keep the basketball fortunes of Grambling on the rise this season. Sykes responded well to a similar challenge last season and came away as the Tigers’ best rebounder and it’s second best scorer. Smallish for a college center, Sykes last year scored an average of 22.2 points per game while averaging 10.4 rebounds. Add to these stats the fact that he played consistently tough defense and you have the makings of a bona fide All-America candidate. Sykes is a rare basketball big man who is tough both inside and outside. An excellent shooter, Hobdy says T erry is in a class all by himself when it comes to playing with his back to the basket. Hobdy adds »hat Sykes will easily go down in history as one of the best centers Grumbling has had, a remark that natur ally conjures up comparisons between Sykes and former Grambling and Nation- al Basketball Association great Willis Reed. “Of course, Reed and Sykes are two different kinds of basketball players,” Hobdy offered, but continued that Sykes is just a shade behind Reed at the same stage of their development. Aside from the excellent play Sykes gives the Tigers, Hobdy says he is probably best in his attitude and ap proach to the game. He is a student of the game, Hobdy asserts and has the ideal attitude. “He is a superstar in that regard,” Hobdy says. Sykes turned in innumberable super- star performances last season. Six times he scored over 30 points and on two occasions put in a season high of 38 points. The AU-American citations eluded him last season, but Sykes expects to collect handsomely this year. He earned AU- SWAC honors last season and is a prime candidate for post-season honors this season. An AU-State prep eager at Colfax High Sykes passed up approximately 25 scho larship offers to play at GrambUng. He became a starter in his first season. In 17 games as a freshman, Sykes averaged 15.1 points per game and pulled down an average of 9.9 per contest. If Sykes continues his season-to-season progress, it is likely that he could shatter a lot of records and help the Tigers win a lot of basketball games. Model EM-8203 Roast chicken in 8 minutes! Hobdy, in his 21st year u head basketball coach at Grambling, says the 1970-77 schedule is one of the most competitive Grambling has ever played. The schedule contains games against at least twelve teams listed in N CAA College Division I. The Tigers will play in four prestigious tournaments - the University of Califor nia Trojan Classic, the Morris Brown Classic in Atlanta, the Far West Classic, and the Southwestern Athletic Confer ence Tournament in Monroe, Louisiana. Many observers think the team will overcome the loss of a two-time All- American guard and a steady All-South ern Athletic Conference forward, to come up with a season matching last year's 22 9 effort. i l tot S M IT H 'S SHOF 9 to 9 WEEKDAYS 30th and 5. E. DIVISION • go to guard Willie Simmons. Simmons guided the Grambling attack as it’s playmaker last season and usually guard ed the opponents' top scoring guard. He’ll serve as one of the team's captains again this season and should provide the steady influence the team may need on and off the court. Simmons averaged a solid 9.4 points per game in 1975-76 but figures to beef up his scoring totals this season. Simmons fits perfectly into Grambling's fast break offense. Forward, f i V , 200 lbs. Grambling coaches threw Herbert Collins into the starting lineup as a freshman and while he appeared miss- placed at first he began to show definite signs of maturity near the end of the campaign. The team's number two re bounder last season, Collins needs to shore up his offensive game to become a first rate performer. Tiger coaches are high on Collins and feel that he could become one of the best cagers to ever wear the black and gold. Big Herb grew a full inch over the off-season and if his progress continues should be bigger and better this time around. I n b .
