A 123,884 one-year project planning grant from the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare (HEW) to the department of psychiatry at the University of Oregon Health Sciences Center (UOHSC) is making planning of such a center possible. Dr. James Shore, chairman of the psychiatry department, said the planning may ultimately lead to submitting to HEW a grant proposal to fund a center, which would offer a comprehensive sys- tem of mental health services. Dr. Shore explains that Portland is “probably the largest metropolitan area in the U.S. without a federally funded community health center program “Because the services to be developed are to be community based and respon sive to the mental health needs of the community, the involvement and partici pation of many individuals is vital. This meeting s objective is to share informa tion regarding this planning effort. We see this as the first step in gaining active participation of community members, agency representatives, and other inter ested efforts in this most important effort," he said. The planning meeting has been organ ized in cooperation with such groups as the Albina Center for Community M»"tal Health, the Delaunay Institute of Mental Health, the State of Oregon Public Welfare Department, and the Portland State University School of Social Work. More information about the meeting can be obtained from Richard Engstrom, resident assistant in psychiatry, UOHSC, at 225-8145. Theater needs actors land Community College. The New Community Repertory Theater “Star Productions", is now con sidering applications from actors and stage technicians for the play The Other Side Of The Coin. The production is sche duled to open January 21st, at Port In 1954 some community women were approached about organising a group to be known as the “Delta Mothers and Patroness Club." These wonwn were mothers who lived in Portland and close friends of the local members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. Inc. The establish ing took place at the home of the first coordinator, Ellen Torrence Law who lived on N. Vancouver Avenue at the time. The main purpose was to serve as an auxiliary to Beta Psi Chapter, of Delta Sigma Theta. The Sorority had hosteo the Par West Regional Conference in 1961 (in St. Phillip's Parish Hall) and because of the small number of chapter members found it difficult to adequately service all tasks. The Sorority also wished to broaden its activities with other community groups and felt that with a Mothers and Patroness Club which could serve in a hostess capacity, the Sorority members would be free to do the programming at a given session. Some of the activities of the Club parallel those of Beta Psi. Community type programs of the Sorority dealt with mental health, career conferences, and counseling and guidance, sometimes alone and at other times co-sponsored with the Urban League, Kappa Alpha Pai Fraternity, and/or General Extension Division of the Oregon State System of Higher Education. The Mothers and Patroness Club was founded on the premise it was to be an auxiliary to the Sorority, but equally strong was the backing and urging of the Sorority to carry on a program of its own so long as those activities were not in conflict with the ideals of Delta Sigma Theta. The first officers of the Club were: President Eleanor Moulden (mother of Gwen Moulden Gerald), Vice-President Eva Manning (mother of Hasel Davis). Secretary Elizabeth Williams (deceased. Patroness of Ellent. Law). Teaaurer Mary Loretta Smith (Patroness of Cyviria Woods). Other charter members were: Nina Jackson (Patroness of Laura Glosson) Annie Shine (Patroness of Ern estine Palmer Brown), Maude Banks Young (mother of Bernice Banks). Roberta Blackburn (mother of Hattie Gaskin), Marguerite Williams (mother of Ann Williams) Ola Reed (Patroness of Geneva Jordan, deceased) and Sylvia Thompson (mother of Addie Jean Haynes). One of the earliest projects undertaken by the Club was the financing of a specially built tricycle for a physically handicapped child at the old Holiday School for Crippled Children. November 11th, 1964 saw the Club launch its “classic", the annual waffle breakfast at the home of Patroness Anna Mae Lee. Shortly thereafter, the Club began holding the breakfasts on the Saturday immediately following Armis lice Day. The waffles are made from "scratch" by the members of the Mothers and Patroness Club. The Deltas help in the actual serving. After twelve years, the breakfasts have really grown. For the Jordan (deceased), Cyviria Woods, Addie Jean Haynes, Jew el Bowman.
