A t Center, wearing Number 32 - a deafening roar and season Number 7 was almost ready to go. Bill Walton scored the first basket of the young season at 10:38 of the first quarter and Blazer fans cheered with delight. None of the Blazers were particularly sharp on opening night, but the job was done and a win is a win. Had to be impressed with young Johnny Davis, however. Johnny started the third quarter and immediately responded. A t 11:05 Davis hit from high up on top of the key off a Walton feed. 10:46 Davis hits again from left front. 9:47 again a Davis jumper from the side. 8:55 Davis fouled by Archibald and con verting two free throws. In the short span of three minutes. Johnny Davis had collected 10 very important points. And the crowd went wild. The Nets were o il their game, obviously, but appears to be a very physical team. Williamson, at 6'2", will intimidate anyone and seems ready to at any time. Corky Calhoun, formerly of the LA Lakers, got off to a super start for Portland * by hitting his first two attempts. Maurice Lucas. 6 V . 225 lb Blazer Super Star, got off to a slow start, but waa blazing at the end finishing with 24 points and 18 boards. Bill Walton also «ras strong on the boards, as usual. even more democratic than presidential elections. In the pro-basketball balloting the winners are decided directly from the popular vote majority, must await confirmation from the electoral college. Also, N BA fans don't have to be citizens to express their preferences and the under 18 set is allowed to participate. NBA All-Star candidates don't have to go out campaigning to be nominated to the ballet. Valaaa yon sail their day to dby playing campaigning, and f gueas i t somewhat. There is. also, room on the ballot for write-ins though like in presidential elections there's every little chance of a write-in making IL All things considered, the NBA All- Star balloting program compares favor ably with other popular elections. And who ran argue with the fans' picks last year? They were: East - John Havlicek (Boston Celtics), and if one were to argue this would be a good starting point for as great as John was he is now looking on the shady side of the h ilt W alt Frasier (N .Y. Knicks), Bob McAdoo (Buffalo Braves). Dave Bing and Elvin Hayes (Washington Bullets); West - Nate Archibald (Kansas City Kings), Rjck Barry (Golden State Warriors). Bob Dandridge and Brian Winters (Milwau kee Bucks) and there, also, cam ba a good deal of arguing here, because neither ( M waa so exceptional last year. And last but not least the redoubtable and remarkable Kareem Adbul-Jabbar (Loa Angeles b * - kjnceonour neweconomy Lakers). There's a Ford and a Carter running but they're only two candidates in this election and the voters aren't required to cast their ballots on November 2nd. To explain further, it's time for the NBA balloting to determine the starting fives for the annual NBA East-Weal Ail Star game, to be played in Milwaukee next February. And in thia ease the Ford is not Gerry but Don, Loa Angeles Lakers* forward, and it's not Jimmy but Freddie Carter, brilliant 76er guard. Basketball being the number one spectator sport, it's no wonder that All Star balloting by the fans draws one fo the largest popular votes outside of the presidential election itself. And with the intrusion of the four new teams from the now defunct ABA there should really be a landslide . . . and. probably, moat of this landslide will be due to the presence of one Julius “Dr. J. Irving." Doctor J. has been setting attendance records all over the NBA and last night in New Orleans sn all time record crowd of 27.383 turned out to see the D r. operate. In some respects the All-Star voting is With Grant's 27-14 win over Benson, the P IL race is dwon to three teams. In the Western Division, Jackson's Raiders are alone at the top. Grant showed a much more diversified attack and with more people involved, the offense really rolled. Nate Richards, the seldom used fullback, scored two touchdowns and was very instrumental in the General offense. Michael Lowe. Benson super back. Is just th a t. . . he's super. Robert Lewis and Daryl Motley scored a touch down a piece for the winning Generals. COMPLETE Once on our money-saving coupons.
