Page 6 Portland Observer Thursday, April 15, 1976 THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO Chapter 2 4 Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulchre, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them. 2. And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulcher, 3. And they entered in, and found not the body of the Lord Jesus. 4 And if came to pass, as they were much perplexed thereabout, behold, two men stood oy them in shining garments: 5. And as they were afraid, and bowed down their faces, to the earth, they said unto them. Why seek ye, the living among the dead? 6 He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galiilee. 7 Saying, the Son of AAan must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again. 8. And they remembered his words. As they look around, searching for it, the angel says: "Why seek ye the living among the dead?" "Tell His disciples and Peter that He goeth before you into Galilee: there shall ye see Him, as He said unto you." At this, the women hurry from the sepulcher and head back to Jerusalem "with fear and great joy.” Never have they run so fast in all their lives! What a story they have to tell! Presently, panting and untidy, they reach the place where the leading dis ciples have been sitting out the night. "We have just come from the tomb!” they cry, "It is empty! His body is not there! And we saw angels who said that he is alive!" The disciples refuse to believe them. They think these poor women are so overtired and upset that they are "seeing things." Their words seem to them "as idle tales." But it's true, it's true!" they cry. "We saw the angels ourselves!" They spoke to us. We heard them! One of them told us to tell Peter to meet Jesus in Galilee." This touches Peter. He got up and hurriedly leaves the room, followed by John. "The women might be right, " one whispers to the other. “Let’s go and see." Together they start on their journey, running side by side, with John, the younger man, gradually pulling ahead. At last they reach the sepulcher and find it open, just as the women had said. John, stooping down, looks in. To his amazement he sees nothing but the linen cloth that had been wrapped around Jesus, and the napkin that had covered His head. Nothing more. They are puzzled. So far, they have found the women's story correct. The stone is rolled away; the body of Jesus is no longer there. But what has happened to it? Has it been stolen? Yet that is impossible, for an armed guard had been outside all night. Can it be that Jesus has risen from the dead? They hurry back to the city to tell the others what they have found. Only Mary Magdalene lingers by the empty tomb. Alone, she stoops down and looks into the sepulcher. There she sees "two angels in white sitting, the one at the head, and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus has lain." Reverend Thomas L. Strayhand. Minister ST. Supposing him to be the gardener, she says, “Sir, if thou have borne Him hence, tell me where thou hast laid Him, and I will take Him away.” Then the gardener speaks God's Gardener. He says but one word: "Mary." It is enough. At once she recognizes Him. "Master!" she cries, turning toward Him. "Touch Me not," He says; "for I am not yet ascended to My Father: but to My brethern, and say unto them, I ascend unto My Father, and your Father; and to My God, and your God." Then He is gone.
