February 19, 1978 School Books g ra d s The Black Spiritual* Part IIP - A Contemporary Encounter W e have noted that the pViceleas literature of the spirituals (which has come to us from the period of Black enslavement) presents the imagery of God as rescuer and source of hope. Here we note that much of the hope in the Black spirituals stems from the fact that they speak as do neither the Old or New Testaments in the most ready terms to our modern world situation. What happened to Black Americans during their physical enslavement, which legally ended just two decades more than a century ago, still persists or prevails in economic and social or psychological terms. In other words, the battle persists, even though strategies have been altered to meet new circumstances, including fresh opportunities for plunder. I t is most important to understand that the American type of human enslave ment, which gave rise to the Black spirituals, was a vast new departure from or aberration in the long experience of human history. It was. as one current historian has noted, a “peculiar institu tion.” When we speak of human enslavement in America, it involved a process of such unprecedented cruelty and inhumanity that no other historical experience of human bondage matched it in degradation. I t is actually unrealistic to speak of America's enslavement of Blacks as the same kind of bond servanthood that existed anywhere else in the world or that even paralleled it in time as. for example, in South America. Always - except in America -- those in bond servanthood possessed civil and human rights. Nowhere - except in America -- were bondservants merely chattel. Always - except in America - bondservants were considered human beings, perhaps even superior, who could reasonably hope for freedom either for themselves or for those who came after them. The crucial point here, for an under standing of much of the import of the spirituals and for an accurate appraisal of our own present situation, is the recognition that the same dehumanizing cultural inheritance persists in our American life today. The fact that it is unconscious does not make it excusable and. indeed, makes it possibly more dangerous and sinister. I t must be dealth with sympathetically, but still thoroughly and without equivocation, in order to root out this glaring cultural deficiency. W hat we are saying is that we live in essentially the very same culture of oppression, albeit dressed up, as did our Balck ancestors in the physically en slaved community which gave us the spirituals. Thus the spirituals speak of Tektronix Opportunities God acting in the cultural settling remarkably akin to the immediate life experiences which mark the entire world in which we live today. The American influence or cultural impact is a global one. This enables the God images and realities of the Black spirituals to speak to our entire modern world. The Black spirituals are contemporary encounters of a people with a con temporary (or present day) culture. In this way. we may sing as realistically as did our enslaved ancestors the words of the spiritual. “Deep R iver“ which remind us that, even when we feel taht we have crossed over Jordan or have “made it" --. we must not expect to take it easy or to settle down since we have merely moved over onto another “camp ground." In an exploitative world, in the present as in the past, there is never any rest from struggle. W e listen to. and join in spirit with, the following ancestral song: Deep river, my home is over Jordan Deep river, lx>rd, I want to cross over into camp groun, Ix>rd, I want to cross over into camp ground. (The next part, in this continuing series, contines the theme of encounter in the setting of our culture.)
