Presby terian Church. Poolesville is about 20 miles from Wash ington, D.C. It began after a long- awaited baby was born .three months early, to Jack and Judy Speer, a computer pro grammer and his wife. The ■ouple was visiting relatives in Cincinnati. The doctors assured the anguished par ents that everything possible would be done to save their son’s life, but realistically gave odds as 3(X) to I . They said they had never seen a baby so small survive. “ We called our pastor, Rev. Filbert Moore at Pooles ville, and asked tor prayer.” Jack Speer recalls. “ He o r ganized a prayer chain with everyone praying every hour on the hour. The baby’s weight had dropped to two pounds, but he hung on.” And the church continued to pray. Jack Speer returned to his job in Washington while his wile stayed in Cincinnati where their son was born and remained in an incubator at Children’s Hospital. "We saw a lot o f other babies die." Jack Speer told his pastor Back in Maryland he found it d ifficu lt to con centrate on his job. One day he left the office to spend the rest o f the day in a book store looking for a Bible that he could read easily. The Living Bible, the pop ular paraphrase by Dr. Ken neth N. Taylor, was his choice. “ I still didn’ t know ... in time of need Church School ........................................................... Harger Greyhound Lines West An Equal Opportunity Employer religious publishers he knew. They told him such a project would cost at least $50,000 a staggering sum. "B ut the odds against the baby living had been 300 to I and he was alive," said Moore. "We decided this was what the Lord wanted us to do and that it would be an act o f faith to attempt it.” Representatives o f the church tlew to Wheaton, III., to meet with Dr Taylor, pres ident o f Tyndale House, who had paraphrased Ih e Living Bible Dr. Taylor not only en dorsed the project, he also supplied the potential mira cle workers with the com puter tape from which The Living Bible pages were com posed. paring countless hours o f the computer work needed to prepare the new book. That was the beginning o f the miracles. Some may call them coincidences, but not in Poolesville. Md The computer tapes which analyzed and indexed every word and footnote in ih e Living Bible were turned over to a computer center - managed by one o f the new church members. He had made arrangements with his employers for donated com puter time. Computer programs w rit ten especially for this job were needed. Jack Speer and other new members o f the congregation were experienc ed programmers. But special expertise was necessary for additional programming and paying for it posed a real problem until the program mer who accepted the task elected not to cash his pay- check until the finished con cordance paid for itself. Another sophisticated machine, seemingly unavail able. was needed for addi tional work. One day a new member o f the congregation called his pastor to report. “ Our company’s been wait ing for one o f these machines for six months. It arrived this week." The concordance was to be readied for the printer by a process called photocom position. A member o f the congregation had a photo composition business. Trust ing costs loomed large. Then the printer, like the program mer, decided he wouldn’t collect his money until the concordance's sales reached the break-even point. The small congregation hoped to get the project on its financial feet with an initial, deluxe edition aimed at libraries. This required special paper with a life o f 200 years. The printer didn’t know where to get such paper. Moore stumbled across a source. "When the first edition came o ff the presses, mem bers had contributed more than $6,000 o f their personal funds, hoping only to get then money back from the sales," said Moore “ Il was agreed that any profit would go to church missions." “ Their faith was pheno menal," said Speer. "One woman, a divorcee with five children, put in $800 het life savings. We told her, ‘We accept it with gratitude, hut we’ll spend your $800 last.’ ’’ But it seems that the con gregatton w ill get it* money back, plus a pnrfit ("hat w ill keep its mission endeavors alive Because the 2.000 numbered first edition l.iv mg Bible Concordances are well on their way to being sold and the church has selected Tyndale House to print other, abridged edi tions. The Living Bible Con cordance was a natural thing for Tyndale House to he in terested in, according to a spokesman for the publish ing company, and the church w ill be paid royalties for each o f the Concordances published and sold by T yn dale House. “ To begin, the concor dance is as different from other concordances as The Living Bible is different from other versions o f the Scrip ture. The Living Bible has translated difficult-to-under- stand terms in today’s lan guage. The Living Bible Con cordance does the same thing." He explained, “ The w id ow ’s mite in most transla tions is defined in The Liv ing Bible as two pennies. The Living Bible Concordance lists the illustration that Jesus used under pennies, widow, and mite and that’s for starters. “ If someone can remem ber only one word o f a scripture he can look in this concordance and find that scripture.” The King James Concor dance that Speer first en countered lists Biblical cities by their ancient names. The JLivuig Bible and The Living Bible Concordance lists the names o f cities presently on those sites. For instance, the ancient city o f Smyrna is now Izmir, in Turkey. The Living Bible Cordance listing is as unique as The Living Bible. And it all started with a premature baby, answered prayer and faith. That’s a miracle any way you pro nounce it. Speer’s problem .-as com pounded when he learned that the only complete con cordance was for the King James English Bible, written in 1611. " I dediced that compiling a concordance for The Liv ing Bible would be a good project for the church. That night, when I had dinner with the pastor, we talked about it," Speer said. "We felt it would be an oppor tunity to make a significant contribution to a greater understanding o f the Bible, and to enable our church to to financially continue its mission work for the Lord in the rural Poolesville area." At first glance, the church seems ill-suited for such an enormous undertaking. A country church, it had grown from 26 members to a mere 58 in six years and still lacked the financial resources tocarry on its mission work. Its existence depended on an annual contribution o f more than $10.000 from other Presbyterian churches. Then Martin Fuller Speer arrived and his birth trigger ed his dad’s need for a con cordance. “ We wanted to produce a written tool, as big as the Bible itself, that the ordinary layman could use as a key to get inside the Bible,” said Speer.
