The image of a great fixithall star is indelible in fond memories and record books, and the sport is a lot better for having Rosey Grier. Now there are new ova tions Io ring the ears. Rosey Grier has become a superb entertainer and actor, and the evidence of his success is his achievements in a very short span of time. He hosted his own immensly popular syndicated television show: he has appeared as a singer at the most elegant clubs and in college concerts throughout the country, and he records for A&M Records. As an actor he was fea tured as a regular on the "Daniel Boone" series, co- starred with Danny Thomas in “Make Room for Grand daddy" and made frequent guest appearances on such shows as "The Man From I'n.-lc," "Wild, Wild West". “I Dream of Jeannie" and more. Recently he starred in a comedy pilot for CBS-TV entitled "Big Daddy”. His film credits include "In Cold Blood". "Mr. Carter's Army", as well as starring roles in two current motion pictures. “Skyjacked" with Charleton Heston for MGM. and “The Thing with Two Heads" with Rav Milland for AID Rosy, one of 11 children, was named after the latt President Franklin Roosevelt, and since then, Rosey has been in the company of some other very distinguished men. His childhood was spent in Cuthbert, Georgia, where he sang spirituals when he was five and saw the sun rise and set while working in the peanut fields by the age of nine. In his free time he sat at a piano picking out popu tar songs and spirituals. His activity in sports be gan at Roselle High School in the New Jersey city of Roselle, where his family moved during his early teens. Rosey was the star of the varsity team. He moved on to Penn State and won honors as an All American lineman, as well as holding the country’s record in track and field as a shotputter. In 1955 he joined the ranks of professional football, en joying twelve years of glor ious action with the New York Giants and the Los An geles Rams. Rosey and pro football parted company in 1967 alter he suffered a torn Achilles tendon early in the season. It was then that he moved completely into the arena of entertainment. Rosey wrote, published and recorded more than twenty- songs and soon his vocal and composing talents earned him guest appearances on “The K raft Music Hall", "The Steve Allen Show", "Holly wood Palace", “The Smothers Brothers Hour", "The Pat Boone Show", "The Boh Hope Show". "The Joey Bishop Show", as well as spanning the day once on NBC by- appearing on "The Today Show" in the morning and Johnny C arson's "Tonight Show" that night. That was some beginning. His singing career and his dramatic act ing career have kept him busy every since. Another thing that keeps Rosey busy is his continuous involvem ent as a human being. Tell Rosey of the young and he is always available for a benefit that will help. His name and participation are prominent on the Board of Direction Sports and the Joseph Ken nedy Foundation for Re tarded Children. There is the world and people of all ages, all races, all of whom have somehow felt the loving helping hand of this gentle giant. Rosey lives his life trying to make the dreams of other great men come true. Part I. "Pleasure", as defined in your dictionary, denotes an agreeable sensation or emo lion; gratification of the senses or mind; amusement, diversion or self indulgence; choice; a source of gratifica tion. In Portland "Pleasure" also means an eight piece hand that plays today's pro gressive soul, pop, R&B. and the now sound. Both the dictionary meaning and the hand combine to form "Plea sure". “Pleasure", formerly known as the "Soulmasters", is a group that originated hark in 1966 out of Jefferson High. It was intially a trio, then a quartet, and sometimes just a combination of local musi cians getting down on the music side. The original group (as a triol was made up of Bruce Smith, Donald Hepburn, and Ken Graham. Bruce Smith is still the percussionist of “Pleasure" today, and the only original active member with the band. Donald Hep burn had a great amount of impart on both the "Soul masters" and "Pleasure" in their musical direction and the group's growth to this point. These two individuals have been with the band through all the changes and significantly helped its de velopment to this point. Looking at a chronological picture of "Pleasure", you can notice the many changes and im pacts th a t have evolved during its four year development. As the "Soul masters”, its framework for music was hasically jazz oriented and this kept them doing spotty engagements such as fashion shows and small dances. There was very little organization and the band would play only upon demand for a certain engagement. Musicians were asked to play with the band on certain engagements and then they could go on their way. This accounted for the change in size of the hand tas mentioned earlier). The core group of the' "Soulmasters" still existed, hut several other musicians played through the group in this time period. Ronny Steen, a jazz drummer who has toured with Johnnie Hammond; Gary Hobbs with the Stan Kenton Band; and Emanuel Boyd, who also played with Jonnie Ham mond; all have joined with "Pleasure". 1969 70 were very shaky years for the group and not very much structure or pro duction of music was oc curring. In late 69 and early 70 a new influence on the “Soulmasters" was to take place in two forms. Michael D. Hepburn and Nathaniel Phillips were added to the group on a part time basis. This allowed them time to play other places and still have an effect on the band. Michael D. Hepburn added his expertise at keyboard and piano, which released his brother Donald Hepburn to deal with musicial coord ma tion and direction. Nathaniel Phillips brought a totally new perspective to the "Soul masters" scene as a bassist with a R&B background (Otis Redding, James Brown, The Horse, etc.). These two individuals are actively with “Pleasure" today in the same capacity as keyboard and bass players. It was not until the fusion of a group entitled "Pepper" that you clearly began to see the musical m em bers o "Pleasure” begin to form, "Pepper" was a R&B group of three individuals: Bruce Carter drums, Marlon Mr Clain guitar, and Nathaniel Phillips bass. This group had a hard core R&B, Black rock background and they were dealing with the Tower of Power. Cold Blood, Sly and Santana type sound. "Pepper" connection with the "Soulmasters" brought with it two more members of to day's "Pleasure" as we know it, but also it brought a dif ferent approach and sound of music. You can see that the images of “Pleasure" today have developed over a long period of time. It has been several changes to get to where it is at now. Next week we will continue on with the story of "Pleasure" and how it has gotten to today and what it is to morrow. TOP TEN 1. Never Let You Go. Blood stone: 2. The YMCA in this city has successively been teaching babies water adjustment and swimming for many years. The John R. Leach YMCA has classes for all ages io the pre school swimming. The classes are divided in such a manner that those children 6 months to 3 years are in the water with Mom or Dad and an instructor and those chil dren 5 and 4 years old are in class just with an instructor.
