Ser vices will bo starting each night at 7:30 p.m. Time often seems to fly by so quickly a year can feel more like a month. Kirk Smith, a religion and philo sophy student, spent one month this summer that, in a way, was a year. Attending Portland Com munity College to gain some extra credits in his liberal arts program, Smith com pleted a one year course in biology in four weeks time, earned three A ’s, yet never attended a class. Smith's progress through the course was made possible through the college biology department's audio tu to ria l concept of learning. Following prepared guide lines, students come and go at their own pace to a "le a rn in g c e n te r", w here microscopes, experiment kits, and tape recordings are avail able. Two teachers are always in attendance to pro vide in d ivid u al assistance when needed. The lecture tapes used in the course were prepared, w ritten, and recorded by the biology department chairman and teaching staff and were designed to sound more like informal discussions than lec tures. He and his wife Karen live at the New Hope Center, a drop-in crisis and counsel ing center in southwest Port land, where he works as a volunteer three or four hours a day. Evenings, he has a part-time janitorial job. Smith says he was in no particular rush to finish the course so quickly, but. “Why not!” “I found I could really con centrate on one subject and just enjoyed moving as fast as I wanted,” he explained. “It was like having my own lab."
