And Han cock has stated that the sp iritu a lity of the music has come from his close associa tion w ith the members of his band. But now the noted pianist has added another element to that cosmic feeling found in his music, and recently described via a new album on Columbia Records, “ Sex tant". Hancock is involved in Nichiren Shoshu Buddhism. "That is one of the many Buddhist sects,” Hancock ex plained, "and in this one the emphasis is placed on chant ing the words 'nam myoho renge kyo'. 'Nam' means devotion, 'myoho' refers to the mystic laws, 'renge' de notes cause and effect, and 'kyo' means sound or energy, frequency or vibration. “ In c h a n tin g ," Hancock added, "you can get anything you want. A ll you have to do is chant for it. But after chanting for a while you learn how less important material things become, and how it is more important to strengthen your inner self. “ I got turned on to that through Buster Williams, the band's bass player. He had been chanting for a month before me, and one night I heard him play a solo that was almost impossible. It came at the beginning of a song we do called “ Toys", and the bass solo normally runs about three or four minitues. It was so mean that I let him play for about 20 minutes and the people just loved it and it also brought up the vibes of the band. When the set was over. I asked him how did he do what he did, because I knew he was doing some thing and I figured that if it was going to make his music sound like that. 1 better find what it was and check it out Dean'» lo c k & Kev Complete lock service A ll work guaranteed I'm your key in time of neec Bw 2844020 Res. 236 5232 3519 N.E. So now I have been chanting for about ten months.” C h a n tin g , a cco rd in g to Hancock, has not only had an influence on the sound the band has delivered in person, but even more so on studio work. C urrently in the process of rem ixing the "Sex tant" album in quadraphonic sound w ith producer David Rubinson. Herbie feels that quad is the best thing that could have happened to his music in being able to give it the best possible presenta tion. “ When I play music I hear it multi-channel wise, so being able to do an album in quad has really excited me. Even though the stereo LP is doing very well. I can't w ait for the quad version to get out on the market.” Besides having done a new album, his firs t for Columbia, during the time he has been chanting, Hancock also scored a film, "The Spook Who Sat By The Door", for United A rtists. The film , directed by Ivan Dixon, is based on the best s e lle r by Sam Greenley. The motion pic ture "Blow Up", and the television specials of a few years ago, "Hey, Hey, Hev, It's Fat A lb e rt", were also done by Herbie. “ Yes. chanting has brought me m a te ria l p ro s p e r ity ," Hancock said. "But the most important thing that has happened to me is being able to see the difference between strivin g for material wealth and spiritual wealth. Be cause w ith spiritual wealth, everything is a subdivision of that spirit, including things material. So I now really consider myself fortunate to have discovered the words 'nam myoho renge kvo'."
