Spaulding Religion in the News Bishops of the African Methodist Episcopal Church made history in Washington, D .C ., recently when they joined the Congressional Black Caucua in a press con ference on Capitol H ill to protest the Nixon Administra tion's cutback in funds for the Office of Economic Op portunity-- marking cite first time that two such powerful Black groups have formed this type of coalition. The Black elected officials, representing their own consti tuents and the Black clergy men, representing some 2 m illion members of the AME Church, pledged at the press conference, to hold a summit meeting of all Black organi zations and institutions in the country, to plan strategy for combating the federal cut backs. Rep. Louis Stokes(D-Ohlo), Chairman of the Congres sional Black Caucus, welcom ed the new alliance with the clergymen and expressed a desire to continue to jointly fight all oppression in this country. According to Bishop H.H. At that conference, the Bis hops drew up a resolution calling upon the Presiding Bishops of Episcopal Dis tricts , Presiding Elders, Pas tors and Lay Members of the AME Church to join orga nizations and agencies cur rently protesting the cutbacks in Washington. In a prepared statement dis tributed at the press con ference, tl« Bishops said, "W e are hare today because we care. We have come to call the conscience of tiie nation to the moment of judge ment. We call the great leaders ofourm inority groups to assemble a leadership con ference immediately to lay out a blueprint for action, "F u rth e r, we call upon the members of the African Me thodist Episcopal Church in every village, town and hamlet in America to join with those forces who are mobilizing to fight these cuts with all vigor and to appeal to the highest and best in A m erica." Olive Baptist Church. M rs . Mabie Neal was awarded a Ruby pin for 1,182 hours of volunteer service and Miss Lena Hillsman was awarded a pin for 251 hours of volunteer service. Obituary Mrs M o llie B. Rogers Funeral services for Mrs. Mollie E. Rogers were held March 9th at New Hope Baptist Church. Mrs. Rogers died in Emanuel Hospital of a heart attack. Internment was in Riverview Cemetery, with Vann's M ortuary offici ating. Mrs. Rogers was born in Laurel. Mississippi on April 11. 1908. She moved to Portland from St. Louis 28 years ago. She resided at 233 N. Fremont Street. Mrs. Rogers was an active member of New Hope Bap tist Church. She served a« Treasurer and President of the Missionary Society. She was a member and treasurer of the Inspirational Choir and a member of the Mary C ir cle. She was Financial Secretary of the General Baptist Convention of the Pacific Northwest, a member of the Portland District Bap tist Association, a charter member and program chair man of the Rose City Minis- ters Wives Council. She was active in the Keep Christ in Christmas Committee. She was charter member of the Fleur De Lis Social Club. Survivors include her hus band. Reverend Roosevelt Rogers; sons. Theodore R. and William P. Rogers; mo ther, Mrs. Dan Jones; sis ters, Rebecca M iller of Port land, Priscilla Ackerson of V e n ic e . California. Ann Meadows. I xm Angeles. Cas sie Jones. Bishop John Adams of Texas contrasted the attitude In America towards helplngpoor people with that of Am erica's attitude towards "bellingout" such majority-owned busines ses as Lockheed and the nation's railroads. "W hat this shows,** he said, " Is that in this country we have Socialism for the rich and rugged individualism for the poor." Bishop S.
