An 869- ton air conditioning system can remove enough warm air in 24 hours to melt 869 tons of ice. Tours of these climate control facilities will be con ducted at hourly intervals during the three-hour open house. In return, 1 get complete care for the rest of my life.” In effect, this was the agree ment that an elderly widower made with a retirement home. And when he died a few years later, the management put in a claim for his remaining asaeti. However, the man's relatives went to court with an objection. “This was gambling, pure and simple," they argued. “ No one knew how many year, he would live. N o one knew how much property he would have when he died. And gambling contracts are illegal.” W att Watchers Kids, heres your chance to help everybody—you, your parents and your friends PGE is having a Col oring Contest fo r Junior Watt Watchers to show you some of the ways all of us can save electricity When you enter the contest, you become a PGE Junior Watt Watcher 1 tsp. sugar Boiling w ater 1 1 /2 oz. light rum 1 /2 oz. dark rum 1 tsp. butter o r m a rgarine Ground cinnamon, optional. "Marques Haynes has been successful as an athlete, sports promoter, and in oth er business endeavors. I believe that with Biella. Ltd., he will create a viable enter prise in the garment indus try." A ssociated with Mr. Haynes in this enterprise is a leading Black designer and a Black sales executive who will head up the firm's sell ing efforts. Both are exper ienced and well known in the garment industry. Biella's design and mar keting of women's apparel will be dircted at inner city department stores. Finding it no more of a gamble than an insurance policy, the court said the law had no objection so long as both parties understood what they were doing. In most cases, contracts for lifetime care have been upheld as lawful and reasonable. Court! aay they serve a useful purpose for those who want the security of a safe haven in their declining years. N o r does the contract become invalid just because it happens o work out better for one tide han the other. In one cate, a retirement home got a financial windfall because a relatively young resident, after paying a large membership fee, died within a few months. In another case, a retirement home tried to back out of its con tract after paying hospital ex penses for an ailing resident for more than four year,. But in both caaes, despite com plaints, the courts ruled that a deal was a deal and had to be carried out. Still, a contract might be in validated by deception. One re tirement home carefully avoided telling an incoming resident that he was signing over sll of his property. In this case, after the man died, his property was held to be long to hia children, not to the home. The court said h could not fairly enforce an agreement on which there was no ' meeting of the m'ttds.” A public service feature o f the Am erican B ar A u o riatio n and the Oregon .State B ar Associa tion.
